How do they personalize urls?

I got a real postcard from a marketer that invited me to join in on a
free webinar.

To register, they had my full name as part of the web address.

what program are they using for personalization if they sent out thousands of snail mail postcards ? Anybody have a clue?

Just a simple database, probably exports to csv and they give that to the company who then mass mails

I would guess some kind of membership software that creates affiliate links - each link with the affiliate's name.

In this case, of course, the page you're taken to isn't a regular sales page where you can earn commission, but a page where you can take part in the webinar.

I've seen this. There are several ways to do it. I don't think
it's complicated, but I've never heard of a script being sold to
    do it.

    At it's simplest it's something like www.domain.com/?=yourname -
the script parses the "yourname" part to fill in dynamic fields
in the sales page, fooling you into thinking the page is really
personalized to you, even pre-filling your registration with your
name. The truth is you could put in any name you wanted, or
mis-spell your own, and it would just personalize to whatever
    you put.

I have a script called Traffic Personlizer by Paul Hancox. I think
it didn't sell well as a product, but it does do this, basically. The problem
was it could do too many cool tricks and it was hard to remember
how to work it. It's still for sale at TrafficPersonalizer.com - Personalize Your Traffic

It's still very cool and you could use it for this marketing tactic easily
enough. I should use it myself but I haven't lately.

Sorry to bump this... I have been looking into it!

There is a company called easypurl.com who do it for you. I couldn't find their pricing. There is also a Boulder Webdesign company who will sell you the software for $250, or do it for you. I suspect it would result in higher clcik throughs. Will be investigating it further and may well test it in 2011. http://www.customerparadigm.com/index.php?id=9 is the link.

Old word processors had a feature called "mail merge", which does this. I'm guessing they still do. (I don't use them much)

However, you can also check out the USPS's online postcard service:
    USPS - PremiumPostcard.com

It's pretty cheap and you can do everything online...And I don't think you even need to be in the US to do it. And it will send out your postcards the next day. (I think)

I just checked and the word processor in Open Office has mail merge, including a wizard to help set things up.

Go to Office Max, buy some postcards and just print them out. Mail merge will take the info from a text(?) data file and print individual post cards, envelopes, sale letters, etc. It works like setting up an Aweber account, using tokens to be replaced with the personalized info.

You can do it in bit.ly too. You can customize the URL that it gives you.
