Business name needed for taxes?

Hey all,
I'm new to IM (just over a month of trying to absorb as much info as I can) and was wondering....do I need to get a business name and tax ID so that I can write off expenses (courses and advertising, etc)? Or can I write these off anyway without a business name.
Thanks for any advice.

If you are in the US (you don't say), then no, you don't need to have a business name or tax ID. When you're doing business as a sole proprietor, you can put it all on your regular taxes using just your social security number. You'll need to be filling out a Schedule C in order to claim the expenses.
