Article Directories Getting Greedy?
I don't want to name any names, but I recently came across 3-4 directories (well known and high page rank) that are now either charging authors to post their articles (monthly fee) or are now restricting usage when it comes to external links. One particular directory I've been using for about a year now has just abolished resource boxes altogether, allowing only 1 external link (just the URL and nothing else) to accompany the article. I don't know about you guys, but I don't think 1 external link, which has no call to action (or anchor text for that matter), is a fair trade off for new, original content. Maybe that's just me.
I'm not badmouthing article directories, as I will always use them to generate targeted traffic. It's just that I feel some of these article directory owners have turned their back on that old "give & take" philosophy that so many of us article marketers hold dear. It's as though they just want us to give them content and receive nothing in return. I'm grateful for these directories and the traffic they have been giving me, but there'll come a point when I, as well as many other marketers, just look elsewhere for our traffic needs.
Alright, well I just thought I should share this observation with you guys. I know some of you will agree and others will disagree -- but either way, I want to hear your opinions.

P.S. This is not meant to single out any one directory. It's just an observation about article directories in general and the route they seem to be taking over these last few months.
