Domain Age Question

INTERNET MARKETING

Hey,

Did a search but couldn't find much on this in particular.

How is domain age calculated:

If a domain was registered at godaddy in 2002 but hasn't had any sites on it, does that mean it has a domain age of 8? Or does it have to be registered and active with a site on it to have a domain age of 8?

Any feed back or insight is greatly appreciated.

Two things that are considered in the age of a domain name are:
- The age of the website
- The length of time a domain has been registered

So do you interpret that as you can have one or the other to come up with the domain age?

Someone may have an official response but Google takes into account the registration history as well as it's own indexing records. So two of my own real life examples..

I registered a site in Jan 2001, it was indexed in Jan 2001 and has a domain age 9 years.

So this one seems to take into account the date first registered / continuous listing / date indexed type stuff.

I recently purchased a domain which was first registered in 2002 but that registration lapsed, the domain went into the post registration process and was eventually de-listed. I picked it up middle of 2009 and that has a domain age of 0 years.

This domain only takes into account the most recent listing date, all the history is still available via Whois so Google knows tha domain has been around the block before.

Thanks NikkiG,

Your last example was one of the main reasons I was asking about domain age. I had 2 domains I picked up that didn't get renewed by their original owner but had been registered since 07 (no sites on them though). So I was wondering if that meant they started back at domain age 0 or if they could be said to be domain age 3.

  Overall it is the content of your site and not it's age that effects ranking.

Thanks for posting the vid John,

I am hoping that I can still say they are aged domains if I go to sell them at some point. So I don't even know if I will be placing content on them at this point.
