terenceyang had a thread about music backing tracks -I wanted top ask about this as well -

does anyone know if offering your own royalty free music through your own website is a viable business model? I have heard differing views on this. Given how cheap music these days - the volume of music sold would have to be significant. Does anyone know of any composers successfully doing this for a living? Thanks!

There are tons of people on youtube who are successfully doing it for a living. But they put a ton of effort into it, and have spent a lot of time getting people to recognize them and know about their music, which they then offer for sale at various places.

    One example:

    YouTube - ronaldjenkees's Channel

He started out just doing this for fun, and now he has a website, sells his music, and many other things online.

If you were to browse around youtube and it's self-made music artists, you will find a few people there who are selling their music like you have said, but their method of doing it is to gain public attention through their videos.

    • Ronald is an amazing musician for sure! And a really nice guy!

It's a difficult industry to be in because your productions really have to stand out to have any success at all. You really have to work hard on getting yourself recognized and doing something that the other service providers don't.
