Confused..webhosting/domain names

Hello warrior,

Ok now i am fairly new to IM and have been going through how to make money etc etc.

But the one thing im really stuck on is web hosting and domain names.

I understand you need 1 domain name per website and then to host that website with a hosting company (im thinking of godaddy or hostgator as hosts and namecheap as the domain name)

Now heres the bit where i get confused.

Say its $8 a month to host and i want to host 2 websites. I need 2 domain names right. So can i host both of these domain names under the same host for $8 or would it be $16, then $24 if i wanted a third website?

On hostgator it says (under the middle plan) that i get unlimited domain names, does this mean i can host all the domain names i want and hosting for $8 a month?

On godaddy it doesnt say so i was getting confused. Im ready to take action but this is the hurdle i face!

Thanks in advance

Shaun

    Shaun,

depending on the hosting company, you can get unlimited domain names for one flat rate. you might also choose one main domain name and then use subdomains for each individual site that you want. it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

    cheers

      Thanks for your reply!

Im looking at just getting my feet wet, i figure the only way to really learn is to have a mess about. The hosting companys that i've looked at i've always looked into the middle sort of plan.

Would it be possible to do the smallest plan and then upgrade to the middle one without losing the work i've done?

    Hi Shaun,

Most web hosting companies will offer a 'free' domain name for life and this will generally be your primary domain name where all your sites will be hosted.

If you find a hosting package which says 'unlimited' domains then go for this as this means you can pay a monthly flat fee and host as many domains as you like.

Also, if you are a newbie, I would go for a hosting company that uses a cPanel and Fantastico, this means that CMS platforms such as Wordpress, PhpBB etc are only a few clicks away and you don't have to do this manually.

Oh, before I forget, if you are going to be using Wordpress or lots of databases, you may want to also invest in a company that offers unlimited MySQL databases as you will be surprised how many you use (even when you're messing about)...lol

Hostgator I think do offer all you require, I use JustHost who have also been great.

    Good luck

Hi Zaheer and thanks for your reply!

So what your saying is i get a main domain with unlimited sub-domains?

So say my main domain from the hosting company was www.shaun.com, would all my sub-domains be www.shaun.com/(insertwebsitename)?

Also regarding host gator their baby plan is as follows:

      UNLIMITED Domains
      UNLIMITED Disk Space
      UNLIMITED Bandwidth
      Shared SSL Certificate

Does this mean i can have as many websites and as many pages on them websites as i like for one flat rate monthly payment?

Please excuse me for these overly newbie questions but i really want to be clear in my mind before i pay out any money.

Im a bit afraid to ask this question in the fear its probably so obvious to most IM's but i'll fire away anyway! When i start my hosting plan what effectively happens?

I know thats a broad question but i am totally out of my depth when it comes to website building. I know you get templates from hostgator so say i used one of them, then decided i didnt like it. How would i go about making my own?

I hear people mentioning wordpress, what is it? Is it like a template or something?

If anyone could link me somewhere where i can find this information that would be great!

Im getting really frustrated because as soon as i think i understand it, something else comes up and then im totally lost again!

Sorry for being so newbie haha i bet i'll look back on these posts in a few months and feel like a idiot!

      Cheers guys!

The important thing to know is that it's a really bad idea to host any domain where you've registered it. As long as you don't do that, anything else you get wrong can always be corrected at a later stage.

Everyone has their own opinions/recommendations, but in general (as you can check out with the forum's search function if you want), the "Warrior consensus of opinion" is certainly that Namecheap is a good registrar and Hostgator is a good host. (And GoDaddy isn't respected or recommended at all as a host, in these parts!).

WordPress is blogging software/content management system which is so flexible (with various add-ons etc.) that you can use it to make almost any kind of website you want. Many Warriors use and recommend it. It's free. You download it at wordpress.org, or in many hosting packages, using the "c-panel", you can install it more or less as a one-click function directly onto your hosted domain (for example, at Hostgator).

Don't get it confused with the limited blogging version of the same software that comes together with free hosting at wordpress.com, because that's for personal use only; nothing commercial/affiliate/monetized is allowed there at all.

Hi Alexa, thanks for a great reply, however your post did raise one question.

          Where you said:

"The important thing to know is that it's a really bad idea to host any domain where you've registered it. As long as you don't do that, anything else you get wrong can always be corrected at a later stage."

Could you break this bit down please, im not sure if i follow. Are you saying if i get the domain name from namecheap i shouldnt host it through namecheap? If so, why is it a bad idea?

          Cheers!

thats extremely good advice from Alexa, personally I host with hostgator and register domains through godaddy as both of their interfaces are very user friendly. Godaddy also usually have cheap(er) domains than most, if you use the code TEK3 with godaddy at the checkout then you can get $7.49 .com domains.

Thanks Alexa i think that covers all of my questions, and some good advice about different domain to host, i will deffinetly be doing that!

A few more i can think of right now if you dont mind :p

Once my website is live can i switch between templates as often as i like? How often would it take to change templates or is it instant?

Thanks for all your replys guys i think im almost ready to give it a whirl!

also, if you host and register domains with different companies then you will need to "re-point" the dns (domain name servers) from where you registered your domain to your hosting account. If you need help doing this then feel free to pm me and I will guide you through it.

Great reply from Alexa and she's pretty much covered everything I was going to say...lol

If budget allows, I would recommend that you try and get each domain with some kind of privacy option enabled as well. Once you start to build your sites, you will realise how important this could be for SEO.

Regarding subdomains, you are correct, when you ftp your site, it will show up as shaun.com/yourwebsitedirectoryname, however, if you have purchased a domain name for this, it will show us as yourdomainame.com. Its very straightforward although I can understand your questions because I went through all this like 10 years ago...lol, things weren't as easy in those days.....hehehehehehe.

Oh and the point about registering your domain with different registrars is definitely a good idea. Its just a way to spread your risk a little that's all. Try and use a respectable company. Namecheap aren't bad but there's a lot better. GoDaddy are very well known and well respected because of their prices, service and credibility.

    Hope that helps
