I have done a little reading on IM, and have decided that I simply want to take the plunge and try some experiments.

What are some ways I can get started? How can I take the plunge and just try something out?

It's a matter of making as many mistakes as possible, as quick as you can!

Hop over to blogger.com and set yourself up a site. Start writing about a topic that you (and hopefully plenty of other people) are interested in, and drop in Adsense ads, and Google Analytics to watch your stats.

Use this as an object lesson in Search Engine Optimization.

Find a couple affiliate products to go with the topic and link those up.

Submit the site to whatever directory you can find.

Sorry, I have no system to suggest. Like you said... jump in and get experimenting!

By setting up some accounts on various sites, that can help you moving forward. You can setup on blogger as well as stumpleupon.com, yahoo.com offers a blog, facebook,, twitter, and the list goes on. Hopefully, you will also get a website at some point, but the reason to sign up to these, it you can start to build a presence, and interlink things over time.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I just made a blog post today for newbies. Give that a read and that might help you with the general principles of IM that I wish I'd known earlier.

Also, the top link in my recommended threads under the tips might help a lot -- it's all about finding the right "income system" to work with your personality, strengths, goals, etc.

People will probably recommend the systems that worked for them, which is great, but those same systems might not work for you.

Whatever you choose to do - do SOMETHING. Even if you fail you'll learn something important. It's very easy to get distracted by the "latest and greatest" method/thing. Don't over-analyze, just jump in.

Based on the reading you've done, what kind of things interest you most? Are you a good writer? If so, you might want to start with article marketing/BUM marketing. Do you have a background in sales or marketing? You might be better suited to creating opt-in pages or long form sales letters and marketing to a list. Not that any of these things are mutually exclusive (ie - you can have an article marketing campaign driving traffic to an opt-in page, building a list that you then market to), just that it's better to focus on one thing until you're really good at it instead of trying to learn everything all at once.

After you've figured out which method you want to pursue first, do more reading about that subject exclusively and maybe find a "guru" in the niche that sells informational products about the topic. Just don't get so bogged down in reading and learning that you never get started! As soon as you understand the basics, jump in and try something - you'll learn much faster by doing than you will by reading.

    johnthed -

My suggestion is to learn as much as you can before spending any money trying to figure out this internet marketing "thing'. When I first started, I spent a lot of money buying stuff that didn't make sense to me. I needed to start with the basics. Knowing how things work and really understanding the business of internet marketing.
There are a lot of great programs out there for beginners. Most of them you could get for free, but eventually you would need to spend some money. I think Video courses would be a great place to start with.

    Good luck -

I have spun my wheels many times before getting started. The main thing is to treat Internet Marketing as a business. There are lots of skills that are necessary to be successful. Find the ones you are good at and outsource the others. There are lots of free lancers on the Warrior Forum that can really help you out.

I found it a couple of days ago. I would have really loved this sort of thing when I started. Hell, I'm even following it now to see what stuff I can learn from it that I've missed.

Enjoy the ride and let me know if I can help.

Why not give bum marketing a go? It's always a great place to start as the methods are simple and it can give you an idea of what internet marketing is all about without having to spend a lot of money. Technically with bum marketing techniques you shouldn't have to spend anything.

Just Google 'bum marketing' and you will find plenty of sites about it.

Go with a free blog. Make a few posts about the product that you are marketing. Don't do a hard sell. Your job is simply to send visitors to the product's site. Social bookmark your blog. Create some articles and submit them to top ranking article sites. This will get your feet wet. Good luck!
