Mainstream, or small subniche?

Acting on a suggestion from one of the Warriors here, we built a site and used a domain name that included the affiliate company name. It was a risk, we knew it, and went with it anyway. If we got caught, they could make us take the domain down. We got caught so now we have to try to salvage the situation.

We have a lot of articles out there with the site link in them. We'd like to try to save them if possible. Could a redirect to a new site/domain work? It may not satisfy the affiliate, I don't know. Appreciate suggestions.

Secondly, since we have to come up with a new domain anyway and a new site, we were wondering about the best was to go: mainstream niche, with 150,000 searches a month but also lots and lots of competition? Or a small subniche, with, maybe, 400-500 searches a month but light competition and a chance to get page 1 in Google?

Appreciate your thoughts.

It depends - if the redirect works out, and you've got a LOT of great articles hosted at reasonably influential websites, you might as well go for the tougher market - if you think you can compete. Check out your competition using Market Samurai (if you have it) and decide a) what Google bases it's rankings on for that keyword (DA, backlinks, page type, etc.) and b) whether or not you can match - or closely match - their linking strategies right now, and/or do so in the future. If you can, then go for it.

Saying that, since you're in a tough spot at the moment, it might be wise to start small, build up some domain authority, and work your way up to the tougher keywords. It's all about how hard you're willing to work, what you've already achieved as far as backlinks (more importantly, if your efforts are transferable), and how quickly you need to see results.

have you used the affiliates domain name in your articles? if so he could ask you to take them all down or edit them.

If not you can simply redirect to your new site no problem

As Tomwood said... if you're using their name in your domain, changing it should solve the problem. You could contact them and ask them if that would be satisfactory enough.

As for the second, i'd say small sub niche. Reason you've stated yourself.

Appreciate the comeback, guys. GoDaddy has assured us it will not be a problem to forward (redirect) from the current site to a new site.

And, we tried going mainstream the first time around and never got more than 2 or 3 visits a day. This time, I think we'll try the subniche route and see how that goes.

Small subniches which are tightly targetted are good, such as

        martial art swords

vitimin supplements for 80-150 year olds, etc
