Laucnhing a site - All at once or Gradually

Hi All,

I'm about to go live with my first real niche, real as in I've taken time and effort with it and I've got my plans etc in place. I was wondering what people's opinions are for launching the site.

Would you go live with all the pages in place or gradually add them over the space of a week or so? Do search engines pay anymore attention to a site if it appears that its being updated like this?

Thanks

David

I would say it depends on the amount of pages you are going to launch. If the site is fairly small then you should be alright. If they are articles then I would post them one at a time.

As banless said, it depends on the size of the site. A site that goes from 0-1,000 pages overnight and then is never updated again looks fishy in the eyes of the mighty Google.

You can build a site in fits and spurts, that's actually a fairly common way for a site to get built.

Is your site in a niche where you frequently updated content is the norm (think tech and gadgets) or a niche that is fairly timeless where updates aren't frequently necessary (wood working)?

If frequent updates are the norm, then dripping in the content regularly is your better bet, if a timeless topic, it won't be as sensitive to how you do it.

    David,

I would go live with the sections of your site in place, having checked all the navigation works, and remembering to put in a sitemap.

You need to remember that a site needs to have fresh content to keep the search engine spiders happy so constantly add new data via a blog or RSS feed and update the sitemap.

Most niche sites I launch have between 50-150 pages at the start. I've not observed any problems with doing this. I've also launched corporate sites, ecommerce and/or informational, that had somewhere between 5000 and 50,000 pages at the start. No problem there as well.

there is no rule about this, but anyway it depends on niche that you are in. I prefer to start with about 50-70% of my blog and later continuously ad new pages, and at the same time promote site.

Thanks all, its a pretty small site in comparison to some of the volumes mentioned here. Roughly 10 pages, its not a blog but rather a static page, although it is in the tech arena so likely I'll add some new pages in as and when.

I think once I get the main page and second page sorted I'll upload anyway and then I can refine it whilst its being indexed.

    David,

You don't want to wait till everything is "perfect". You may never get there

It's fine to launch your site a bit at a time, just keep your overall Information Architecture in mind, so that as you grow, your site does not become confusing.

    Warmly,
    Jennifer
