Dont forget to close the door !

Let me ask you a quick question.

If you had a shop selling valuable goods would you close the door and lock up when you were not around or would leave the door wide open and just presume people would not walk by and help themselves ?

Im guessing its the former.

So why do internet marketers leave their products wide open. Just today I came across a $197 product I was interested in. I plugged the product name into G to get some feedback etc and I could not believe the second result was the actual download page you get after paying.

This is not the first time I have come across this and Im guessing it wont be the last and Im not just talking newbie IM'ers who dont know what their doing. Clever IM'ers are leaving their doors wide open as well. There was a very recent high profile launch of a guru's high ticket product and almost immediately after launch the download page became very common knowledge.

If you have a product I suggest you take one of the many widely and cheaply available options and keep it under lock and key

Very wise point, Dave...that ALL Warriors can (and should) learn from). It's worth taking the necessary time to ensure that necessary securities are in place.

Makes you wonder if maybe they're doing it on purpose in some cases..

I half wonder about that sometimes. Perhaps its some sort of perverse way of promoting a product. Although the thing is if your buying a product about IM from somebody that cant even protect their own product then what does that tell you ?

It tells me that the product may not worth my while after all. This is more than a mistake. It can kill any business.

It's incredibly common. Another one you see very often is they block the directory in robots.txt but don't put an index file in that directory, telling the search engines what not to list but telling you exactly how to find it!

I don't think it's intentional, they just don't realise. OTOH, I've emailed some sellers about this and seen nothing change, they probably don't see it as a problem. In most niches it probably isn't a problem.

Best way to protect your download links is to include a robot.txt file so Google doesnt crawl those.

    Any questions let me know

How do you guys go about doing this?

Personally I've done basically what Nick said, just told Google not to crawl or index the pages.

But even so, they aren't secure, i.e. anyone could put the address in and find it whether they paid or not.

Personally I use ejunkie which hosts my products for me. It provides the buyer with a download link which expires after a certain amount of time or a certain amount of download attempts which ever comes first.

I have heard good things about DL guard but not used it yet, but will look more into it rather than paying the monthly fee for ejunkie.
