If i had a keyword that got about 400 searches per month, and the keyword was buy [insert product name], would this be worth optimizing for? would I even see any conversions? I feel like this is a dumb question...

Why do you feel this is a dumb question?

well i think it's obvious that i'd get conversions, im just not sure if it would be worth optimizing for. I mean If i have a good review site set up, and an article written about why I bought the product, I think it will convert well. but is 400 searches per month worth all of the work?

Is highly targeted traffic worth the work??

You knew the answer It was kind of obvious :p. Now you may not convert all 400 but if they are typing in "buy xxxxx" there is a good chance they are looking to buy. It wont be a retirement fund but it may be an extra 100 bucks a month which is quite nice and is probably worth it. Look at the competition, if it is insane, don't bother, if it is easy, do it.

I would look at what I would earn per sale plus the conversion factor or how many of those 400 visitors turn into buyers. I'd also consider how much time would be required for optimizing. For example: If the 400 searches are for a product that converts at 5% costs $20 and I get a 50% commission is my effort worth $200 a day?

these are monthly searches and I would probably expect maybe half to a quarter of these searchers click to my site. so maybe 200 per month on my page, but the traffic is extremely targeted

Who's telling you 400 searches a month? If it's the Google Keyword Tool, they also include stuff like impressions on their content network triggered by those keywords. I've bought plenty of domains that claim to get 30k+ searches a month, ranked #1 for the term and gotten little to no traffic.

"Buy XXXX" are the best keywords: these are people looking SPECIFICALLY to purchase. You should take these keywords and build landing pages specifically to sell product on them; ditch the AdSense and other marketing methods and work directly with a vendor*.

    * This assumes you're talking about serious volume. If not, head over to your favorite affiliate networks and see what they have going for you: CommissionJunction, Azoogleads, etc.

No one can judge the conversion ratio exactly, always observe what others doing in your niche and you do better then others. Try to concentrate on multiple keywords.
