Wordpress 3.0. It Is Coming... Are You Ready?

What major changes are happening in 3.0? At first look, you won't notice any major changes. You will upgrade or install it and everything looks pretty much the same. But, oh, how little you realize what is different.

Some of the big changes, (there are tons more):

There is a new default theme in wordpress. It is a little more robust than the old one and allows you to do more.

You can now create custom menus through the Appearances Tab. With a few clicks, you can add a page, a category, an external link, and more. Drop it like a widget and you are done! No more asking coders to do it for you! ( I'm a coder)

Tired of rigging wordpress to do what you want it to do? Now, with a couple of lines of code, you can make your own Vlog, (video blog) Podcasting blog, Photo, chats, and Quotes. This was functional in 2.9, but it has been beefed WAY up in 3.0.

All of these were pretty much expected, but this next one is BIG.

Wordpress and Wordpress MU are MERGING!!

That's right! If you want to start off with a regular blog and then make a network later, or are tired with trying to figure out MU's cumbersome setup and integration, you are all set.

Now all you have to do is install wordpress, do the MU install from the admin panel and you have a full fledged MU just like that!

There are a ton of other things that are coming, but these are some of the main one's addressed right now.

What does everyone think? I know it will bring a whole new spectrum to current blogs on IM, especially the Post types. Imagin being able to do an easy Real Estate Posting Blog in minutes!

Here are some menu examples, etc:

I'm looking forward to it. Wordpress just keeps on improving. I'll admit, even with the automatic upgrade feature it's never fun sorting through each and every blog and getting the latest version, but once everything is updated it's all worth it.

I love hate wordpress because I am still learning however, it sounds like this is going to be easier to use and if that's the case i am all for it.

I'll admit it, I had to google to find out what wordpress mu was, but at least I guessed correctly - mu = multi user.

Question though - has anyone heard of the ability of fantastico or simple scripts to install wordpress mu - or plans to add that feature? When I installed WP a few days ago on bluehost, using simple scripts - it defaulted to the beta 3.0a version - but of course none of the plugins worked, so I had to back out to 2.92, but I didn't recall seeing WP MU as an option -

Does any host have that as a scripted install?

    Thanks in advance!

I agree, that becomes quite the PITA over time, and I'm sure I'm preaching to the quoir however it's critical to upgrade normally because of possible security fixes. I hear you though it's discouraging at times how often WP is updated but at the same time WP is free so we really can't complain.

Right now, it has to be added by editing code in your install, but any programmer who knows his or her way around wordpress can do it in 5 minutes. Just ask a fellow coder and they will be happy to accommodate.

My great fear with doing it that way is that when wp3 comes out, it might not upgrade properly or even at all. I guess I can wait for 2-6 weeks before upgrading - I just hope that upgrading to the MU version works well, and that combining existing blogs is an option, otherwise I might have to hire that programmer after all.

I've been running 3.0 alpha on a test installation for a bit now, and just switched it to 3.0 beta 1 today. One of my few niggles with WordPress has always been how you can have multiple category widgets in your sidebar, but they can't be configured to show anything other than the same thing as each other (colour me baffled ). The custom menus feature addresses that and beyond, and given the amount of times in the past I could have used that without resorting to a plugin or re-writing the sidebar code for a single blog this is probably my favourite feature. Like you say, there's bags more potential there though.

I have a really neat idea I've been tossing around which involves wordpress mu, but haven't yet had the time to implement it. The integration of WP and WP mu might make it loads easier to administer on my end. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
