How Big is Too Big? - Download Size

All,

I'm busily creating videos. I've just checked my avi file sizes, the combined total is almost 60GB and I've not finished the 'set' yet. I'll be converting them to flv.

The original plan was to make everything downloadable. Yet, I thinking most people will not sit there and wait for X GBs to download, no matter how good the content is.

So the questions then become:
How big is too big for downloads?
Turn it into a physical product?
Host them and offer a membership style access for X days?

Why do I hear, all of the above?

I don't mind a large download as long as i can start it and then minimize it so i can do other things and come back when the download is finished. Can you compress it?

60 gig = waaaay to much ... Videos can be compressed down into small files, a good 2 hour video can easily be compressed into about 400 meg, depends if you are moving a lot etc...

        Thanks all.

I'm I must be able to compress them or at least split the files into several downloadable chunks.

To think there was me getting board of doing all the video work. Now I just want to see how large all the avis are combines. Only 23 left...phew.

Personally the biggest file for IM I have downloaded was affiliate landing page classroom with was about 1.3gb I thought that was big!! 60 is probs a bit too big you may want to compress it slightly also at it's current size it is probably too big for many hosing providers but don't quote me on that

Try to give them a MAX 10MB option! For email, 0 is best, but keep it to less than 2MB.

For me, any file above 100 mb is big, and I don't remember downloading anything around 100 mb for info products. I am sure you could compress them to a much lower level without losing quality that much.

60 Gb is way too big. I'm like ademmeda, I won't download anything more than about 200Mb. Even if you were to upload them to a website, they would take a while to buffer and load before playing.

Definitely reduce file size if you can by running your AVIs through whatever software you used and reducing the audio quality and video size. You don't need 1080p or similar on a computer screen.

I create content on an AVCHD video camera and for web delivery I crunch it with Adobe Media Encoder. It offers a stunning array of presets and will guarantee you good, useable footage. I usually convert to flv or swf formats. Adobe Media Encoder is not available for separate purchase as it was bundled with the Creative Suite, but there are other standalone alternatives. For instance this one is free and will convert AVI files to FLV or MP4 and vice versa.

I just uploaded a package of resale rights to a download page that is 1.3 GB. I was debating splitting it up, but I figured I would wait to see what customers think.

It seems like most people operate with high speed nowadays, and I put a link to a free download manager on the page so they can do it in chunks. Hope that helps with it.

When you get beyond 1GB, the entire perspective changes on a lot of things. I am comfortable with giant downloads but that's because I am comfortable using BitTorrent and will download DVD sized things from time to time over a 20 meg down fiber pipe. Most people won't have the patience to set their system to download for 16 hours.
