Internet Screenshots in Books and eBooks

Hi,

A lot of Internet Marketing eBooks use screenshots in their eBooks, particularly with tutorials.

Does anyone know if this is actually legal? I'm not expecting legal advice here (although it would be welcomed!).

If for instance you were to put some screenshots of "Google Analytics" in a printed book which you were going to have published, could this be a trademark infringement?

There are so many printed books about Twitter, Facebook etc and all of them seem to use these screenshots and looking in the prefaces I don't see permissions given etc.

I am keen to use screenshots myself, but don't want to end up in hot water further down the road.

Cheers,
Derrick

Where it gets really sticky is when you're actually profiting by your use of the work.

Here is a good summary: Ask the Law Geek: Is publishing screenshots Fair Use? - Copyright - Lifehacker

You can also check the FAQ of the site or application program you want to use screenshots of. Some will indicate whether or not you may use screenshots.

When in doubt, ask--either the company whose product you want to use screenshots from or a lawyer, or both.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I use a lot of screenshots and I always ask permission and I've *never* had anyone say no. This includes some very, very big companies. After all, if you are showing people how to use their product or service then why wouldn't they want it.

And by the way, Google allows you to use screenshots without permission as long as you follow their guidelines which you can find by using Google to Google it.

My publisher obtained permission from Google to use screen shots of their site in my books. I don't know if that's just their policy or a requirement. Most sites will be glad to receive the publicity if you just ask. Including the context in which you want to use the screen shot with your request will save time.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
