Twitter Tip O The Day

I know that some people suggest using www.search.twitter.com to search for terms that people are discussing on Twitter, so that you can follow people with similar interests.

However this isn't always the ideal way to do it.

Examples: I talk about my ghostwriting. Now I have not one but several ghost hunters following me. I'm actually scared, people, help me!

I asked Chuck Welch a golf question. Now I have a LOT of golfers following me. I couldn't golf if my chihuahua's life depended on it. What the heck is a nine iron? How many irons do you need for the love of God? Does it end at nine or do you have to drag dozens and dozens of irons out there with you?

I talked about how my son loves his XBox 360. Now I have a bunch of adolescent boy gamers following me. I never ever ever ever play video games; I have nothing helpful to contribute to a videogame discussion except "Oh for God's sake, go outside and get some fresh air!"

So my point is, if you are using Twitter for marketing purposes, don't JUST use the www.search.twitter.com function to find people to follow - check their profile and their website to see what they're all about.

I've had some interesting follows as well, so I've been asking ppl why they decided to follow me, if for no other reason than to see which hat they picked my name out of.

Sadly, most ppl don't respond, so that's a big giveaway that unless they're in my niche, I don't need to follow them back.

I don't actually mind following people out of my niche because it makes for interesting variety of conversation - I'm on Twitter both to be social and to market - but since we're limited to following 2000 people, when I get to that limit I may have to go unfollow some people who I have nothing in common with and who will never be potential customers.

If we're limited to following 2000 people, how is John Reese following over 3500?

Because once YOU get 2000 people following you, then you can follow more.

It's also a relatively new rule, so if people were following more than 2000 before they implemented the rule they got to keep all of their followers.

    Dana says,
"How many irons do you need for the love of God?"
Answer:None! God loves you with or without irons.

      Great tip Dana.

I've been amazed at the diversity of followers that I have. It's pretty good to get different perspectives. I do try to stay as close to the niche as I can.

Some people think having a lot of followers on Twitter is like having a large list to email.

There are similarities but it is not the same effect. Generally, I think fewer people will open your Twitter post than an email send. Neither are something to write home about.

Evans, Welsh...details, details...wow, I'm glad I'm not still a reporter, my editor would have roasted me alive for that one.

But see, I SENSED that you are Welsh. So I was just being descriptive. Yeah, that's the ticket.

What do these "Followers" do? I just don't get it. I have been over and joined but it just all seems so, well, anal. all those one line posts. Is Twitter an acquired taste? what point am I missing? Do all those followers read all that you write? and then follow you outside of Twitter, is that it?

A speaker I enjoy has mentioned a similar attitude about golf a few
times. He says that if he ever does have to get a golf ball in a hole
he'll pick it up and carry it, which would save all the equipment and
    practice.
