My vs. .Net (Domain Question)

Assuming you own both of these:

mykeyword.com
keyword.net

Which would be the preferable one to use?

The name would be for a mini-social network type website.

Mykeyword.com I always prefer a dot com because I believe that it is the more commercial viable of the two. Most people if they type in a url always end it with dot com.

    i'd go with keyword.net

the shorter, the more memorable... the more SEO juice as well

I'd go with the .net one...probably. Kind of depends on what the actual keyword is. For example, if I were offering a cure for jock itch, I'd rather have JockItch.net than myJockItch.com.

For search engine optimization purposes, it doesn't matter.

For human perception, .com .net and .org are all well-saturated in the human psyche now so I don't think that matters any more either.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Thanks all. Looks like we're split 66% for the .net and 33% for the .com, but with this small sampling, it's not statistically much better than 50/50.

This new site, whether built on the .net site or the .com site, will be advertised offline, so it needs to be something people will remember.

I would certainly go with the .net

If it will be advertised offline, then I would go with the the .com since many people struggle to remember the extension.

How about split testing? Put a simple PHP or META redirect script on keyword.net to mykeyword.com, advertise both domains and analyze whether keyword.net gets a lower response.

Data is always better than opinion.

Ha! Two more responses; two opposing opinions.

In this case, I'm more in the mind of pick one and go with it.

Looks like this thread has run its course, so I'll update it with the "results."

        First, thanks all!

I solicited opinions on this both here and on my blog.

There were five people that picked .net while two picked the my .com option. While not a statistically valid sampling, .net is the clear favorite here.

So, .net is the one that I am going to go with.

That decision is made even easier by some information I left out. I didn't mention these things because I wanted opinions based on the domain names themselves and not on these other factors.

First, I own the keyword.com domain name too. I am not going to use it for this specific project for other reasons, but that certainly gives me an advantage in that I can put up a link on that site "Were you looking for...?" with a link to the .net site in case people go to the .com rather than the .net.

Second, the .net is already an established site with related content. It is 12+ years old and currently has a PR3 ranking. For a number of search terms, it is on the first page of Google and other search engines.

By comparison, the my .com is a one year old site with no content, no backlinks and a PR0.

Third, the .net site already pulls in several thousand unique visitors a month, which I think is pretty good since I haven't promoted it in five years and, according to Google, it only has one backlink.

Overall, I think that here the .net is a pretty clear winner.
