Tell a friend scripts - risk of spam?

Hi,

wanted to find out if anyone is using any type of viral / tell a friend script on their domains like "viral friend generator", "viral inviter"?

My understanding is that the emails that get sent out are from the domain mail server....

so, is there a risk of these emails getting flagged as spam?

    Ron,

You are correct about the script sending the emails from your server. Have had too many clients test TAF scripts and the results weren't worth using them.

    Thanks,

      Hey John,

how are you? Yeah - that's what I was thinking as well....it might go viral, but there's the risk of getting your domain name blocked by the ISP, if there are too many spam complaints...

I'd say it's not worth it. If someone likes your site enough to tell a friend about it, they'll tell their friend about it.

I had such scripts on a couple of my sites for a couple years. I think the only time they were used to "tell a friend" were the first couple test messages I did myself.

Never had any spam complaints, nor did I get listed on any publicized black lists.

There were a lot of spammers using it though. Or trying to use it. They were looking for vulnerabilities in SendMail where they could bypass the script and use your mail server to send their spam. Well, my sites didn't use SendMail, so that didn't work for them. And since the customization options of the script were limited, they couldn't stuff my script with their spam. So, it was really ineffectual for the spammers.

But, it was ineffectual for me too since the spammers were the only ones trying to use the script.

Besides, these days you can use "share this page" links to digg, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and people can tell their friends that way.

If I like something on a site, or maybe want to notify others of an upcoming critical bill in congress, I really appreciate the Facebook and Twitter buttons. Sending out an email myself at that point just seems like too much effort and, of course, you want to reach a lot of people at one time.

    Hi Dan,

good points...was just wondering if anyone had used a TAF script effectively...

the benefit of a TAF script over just a plain 'share this page' is that you could "bribe" your visitors with a free gift if they sent it out to X number of people..

I know Frank Kern had good success with GKM on the Core Influence site, but that script seems to be buggy (based on a diff thread on this forum).

I've disabled it since someone found it on one of my sites and amassed a bunch of spam complaints from that form.

This may help you... I contacted ViralInviter some time back asking the question about twitter direct msges... and he gave me good idea. here is his reply

generally, yes, it CAN happen that twitter bans your IP.
That can happen with any other webmail provider as well though.

That's why some of the bigger guys use viralinviter on a different server and then implement the interface via an iframe on their site.

The real problem with TAF scripts that get hosted on your servers is that many times, your mail gets funneled to Spam folders instead of the inbox to begin with.

    Just my experience.
