getting traffic from commenting on blogs - is it worth it?

Guys,

Have I got this right?

If I post a comment on a Wordpress site - is it by default a no follow link?

If so - does that mean that the backlink to my site is not counted?

And if that is true - why do so many say that commenting on blogs is a good way to get traffic.

Thank you guys,

Jenn x

I have seen in a Matt Cutts video in which, he says that no-follow links are automatically ignored from passing link juice or PR.. But these links are great ways to attract traffic.. My blog receives atleast 100 uniques a day from blog comments.

Just make sure that you don't post junk/meaningless comments.

not all wordpress sites are nofollow by default.

wordpress is not the only blogging platform

If you leave a comment with links that are relevant to the readers of that blog then you may get traffic from it.

The one thing that most marketers fail to spot or even come close to understanding is that Google like to see a well balanced landscape regarding inbound lnks to any site. By that I mean, a mix of inbound links that involve all forms of links from dofollow, nofollow, direct links, indirects, redirects and even typos as this represents a link picture that could be constructed by humans and making screw ups is what we humans do best.

Any background link picture that just involves 100% anchor driven and themed links looks exactly what it is, manufactured and falsely created. How this affects you is that don't worry about what your links are whether they are dofollow or nofollow. If its a good blog with lots of traffic then the chances are that the links will be nofollow but you will get traffic if your comments contribute to the whole overall subject theme of the blog. If they don't and all your coomemnts just look like spam then you get what......

On the other hand if the blog comments are dofollow and the blog has less traffic then you get the SEO benefit out of it so not all is lost.

I have been trying it and I get few hits from here and there but nothing really special. You would need to make a tons of comments and be first in most cases. It may work but never treat it as your main source of traffic.

Most people do not comment on blogs with the intention of generating traffic, they instead comment to increase the number of backlinks to their website which theoretically will help their website rank better in organic search results.

        Blog commenting has two purposes:

Backlinks - Blog commenting is great for getting backlinks to your site, which in turn will increase your ranking in the Serps and therefore increase your traffic.
Most people tend to run around getting thousands of blogs to comment on. - A smarter way to do this is to find high PR blogs with the 'top commenter' widget installed then leave a 'highly relevant' comment, save this list of blogs and go back and comment regularly on the same site - what happens is that when you get on the list of ' top commenter's' your link will be placed on every page of that blog (sometimes running into thousand's of pages) - find a good list of at least ten of these blogs (so that your links are on different IP's) and you may never need to look for a link again. (Read sgsmorgan's post over and over until it sinks in :-))

Organic traffic - If the comment you make is relevant to the blog and adds something to the original post you will get more traffic from it. If you make a post like 'Nice blog' you will get a back link (maybe, if it's approved) but you haven't added any value for the reader so you are unlikely to get any traffic from it.

Everyone needs to read this comment by John about 20 times. There is the magic of blog commenting wrapped up in a single paragraph.

Forget about Do Follow and No Follow, become a contributor, and reap the rewards.

P.S. If you really follow that advice, you can get links from news networks, educational domains, government blogs, and high PR blogs with no problems. Ignore that advice, and you get lots of PR0 back links.

I took a challenge last year from the owner of an adult blog to prove this exact point. In less than one day I was able to get him moderated comments from blog owners on EDU, GOV, and from 5 major news outlets. How? I looked for studies on women's issues concerning pornography, and commented as an expert from the field.

Same as anything else online, automate and scale up until it becomes worth it. You can post thousands of comments if you want and get decent traffic from it.
