My frustrating journey with ftp and godaddy

So, im the furthest thing from a webguru which is why i was reluctant to help a friend create his auction website. After he signed up with godaddy today, i went on a journey trying to find out how to get the website i created on coffeemate to his website registered on godaddy. I used the FTP available on coffeemate and filezilla with no luck. I found his FTP server (which im still not sure is right), password, etc.

Nothing is working or connecting. It says invalid, connection timed out, etc. etc. etc.

Possible Problems.

I have the wrong FTP server, im not sure what this is exactly to be honest but it asks for it.

im using his default password and username, which is what most people said to use.

I dont know his pin number for tech support. My journey brought me here after 8+ hours of this frustration and im hoping someone can help me through this.



AND I FOUND out that they have an ftp on godaddy's website and i uploaded the files from cofeecup but how do i upload them in html format? Like, tbh i dont get that at all. How do i get it so that the cofeecup files show up on the website. So confusing. Why cant everything just be simple? Im not that savvy jeesh!

    Depends what kind of hosting plan he has.. If it's shared then you would most likely FTP into the main domain and use the user/pass you access the cpanel from. From there the domains each have their own directory

      I dont even know what the hell that means. Its just one account, i log into his... is that what you mean?

    Control panel username/password are usually the same
    as FTP. Port usually should be 21

    Send me your friend's FTP info via PM and I'll check it for you
    if you like. You can change the password later if you
    think I have any reason in the known universe to violate
    your trust.

      Shortest answer is migrate away from godaddy. They're fine for domain names (well, even some issues there) but I've had nothing but headache and weirdness from their hosting platforms. It's definitely not traditional, and is set up more for their administrative convenience than for your convenience or productivity. I'm talking here about changing file or directory names and being told you have to wait multiple minutes for their system to refresh itself. Maybe it ftp passwords or something else, but regardless, it's a system that's far more confusing than almost any other traditional web hosting setup is, and for the sake of a couple of bucks you probably will end up saving yourself (or your friend) hours of needless frustration in the future.

      OK but what do i use for FTP Server and www folder

      Im assuming www folder is just the url (example.com)

      but what about the FTP Server?

        ns234.domaincontrol.com is your nameserver. Not relevant
        to FTP really.

          Ok im skrewing using a FTP program and im just using the default built in godaddy ftp. IM LOST AGAIN.

          This sounds super newb but i uploaded the pages and everything but how do i get my idex page to even show up. None of the pages are showing up on
          KingArthursAuction.com. How do i activate them?

          Srry but this is my first time doin it.

    I would suggest using cute ftp which I have been using for years. It costs about 30.00 but is well worth the money for its ease of use and reliability.

    I have published using ftp built into Xara and using FTP client via the GD control panel.

    If files are too large, use unusual characters in names, you must use FTP client via control panel.

    I've never used coffee cup, but I suggest you publish locally, then log into CP and use FTP client.

      You have two threads about this - but the problem may be as simple as having registered the domain yesterday - it may not have been ready till today and also will take time to propagate if you had to reset the DNS.

        Save yourself the HEADACHES... listen to mgkimsal. Switch to a host with cPanel such as Hostgator or BlueHost, etc. The problems you are experiencing with Godaddy Hosting are just starting. In the time you have burned trying to resolve the issue, you could have launched five, six or more websites.

        You need to realize that Godaddy's hosting IS NOT user friendly for newbies and their shared hosting program doesn't stand up with a person has a number of high traffic sites.

        As far as FTP programs there are a number of free ones such as Filezilla. However, if you want ease of use, go with WS_FTP Pro by ipswitch. It the most intuitive FTP Program on the market. Its so user friendly that you'll have very little learning curve if any at all.

          Yeah, the only problem is i did not get goDaddy.. he did, and he uses it for his other sites that someone else created. So... i Think i am going to wait this thing out because that seems to be the only forseeable solution. Thanks for the help!

    Let me say that although I get all my domains from go daddy every script I ever installed wether it be amember or a Q&A script or any script go daddy alwyas had to get involved to get them working.

    I now host everything with HOSTGATOR and every script is a simple install. EVERY one. I dont know what is with go daddy but they absolutely sucj when it comes to script installs.

      Okay it is all well and good a bunch of people telling you not to use godaddy but if that is what your friend is using and isn't going to change here is the solution to the problem.

      The first thing you need to do is log in to the Hosting Control Center of his Godaddy account. Then select "manage account'. this will open a new tab or window with 4 big buttons at the top. select the one that says "Your Domains- manage site domains". You will then see a button top right that says "add domain" select that and then a window will appear with 2 boxes, one will say "domain" the other "/folder". Start typing the domain name and it should appear after the first couple of letters are typed. Add the domain that you want to use and create a new folder for it if you wish.
      Once that is done it will appear in the list of domains that have been added to the hosting account with a status of "Pending" It could then take any where from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours to change to status "set up"
      Once it is set up here's the simplest way to get all the files there.
      On your computer take all the files for the site and archive them into a zip file using winzip or winrar.
      Go back into the hosting control center this time click on the first of the 4 buttons "File Manager- manage site content."
      On the next page double click on the name of the folder, in the left column, you created in the previous steps.
      Then select "upload" which is along the top in the tool bar.
      Browse to the zip file you created on your computer and select upload.
      Now you have that on the server, select by putting the check mark next to it and the hit the "Unarchive" button in the tool bar and you are done.

      I used to unzip files on my computer then FTP them and it would sometimes take an hour, until I discovered you could upload the zip file from within your hosting control and then just unzip it right there, taking about a tenth of the time.
