      to be brutally honest...

Squidoo is very strect on content.

I've written some value driven content on "how to" and mindset for the entrepreneur.

But none of it was getting approved.

I even took out all of the links and kept only motivational content but still a no go.

But Hunpages is much more user friendly but then again the quality maybe sacrificed. I still think it is solid in quality.

Squidoo is a criminal site in my mind. They are totally pro for you to make money through your lenses, but they deny totally normal material. I really hate them. I have moderated my content several times, so there isn't even a hint of money in my lens, those stinking rangers still don't approve.
I haven't used Hubpages yuet, although I am tempted to.

I would go for hubpages (I try to avoid both nowadays due to squidoo becoming ridiculous about content and I believe hubpages is starting to go the same way).

I've used both for a number of projects and never really seen much traffic from Squidoo, they are stricter on the advertising part and don't appear to rank as well as HubPages.

Yes they are out of the penalty, but they don't rank as well as they used to.

    Rellie,

Like the 2nd poster alluded to, it certainly won't hurt to use both in conjunction to start....

As you become more and more familiar with 'other' platforms with high search engine authority, it won't hurt to expand your online presence using all in conjunction...

Squidoo and HubPages do have some inherent limitations though.

Personally I found squidoo to be too time consuming...
Id rather spend time making video and creating Pod casts...

On another note, I do LOVE HubPages, however, you have to be careful with them because:

HubPages allowance of "Do-follow" links are directly related to a writer's overall Hubscore. At the time of this post, a writer must have a Hubber Score of at least 75 in order for them to have "Do-follow" links associated with their articles. If a writer's score falls below HubPage's threshold for "Do-follow" links, they will have "No-follow" links applied.

"When the Hubber score (AuthorScore) is below 75 all links in all hubs by the author will have nofollow applied (which means no, or very little benefit in search engine rankings)."

Now, I'm not a frequent enough user to know how quickly that Hubscore is actually changed. If it is adjust quite frequently, it could require some effort to really keep it above 75....

.....and, as for Squidoo, they have had their share of issues....as the internet continual evolves, these companies/websites are clearly testing and learning what works and what doesn't work in the eyes of Google...

There is always a delicate balance between making users happy, allowing just enough functionality and incentive to make that happen, as well as, producing and promoting quality content.

I don't mean to discourage you from using either platform, however in IM time=money, and that is why it is important...I would HIGHLY recommend....reviewing the TOS/FAQs of various website platforms...

Also, bear in mind, the internet is continually evolving...websites that have high search engine authority may not have the same authority a few weeks down the road for one reason or another.

As another poster had mentioned, Squidoo was "slapped" by Google....which lends one to easily deduce that, in the eyes of Google, quality is viewed highly to some degree. The problem is....how does a site maintain quality, while also allowing enough incentive and functionality (affiliate links, etc...)....in order to make their site enticing enough to users (and, thus, make their company revenue through adsense/revenue share, etc)

It is obvious that Hubpages rank better on Google than Squidoo because it seems that Squidoo is becoming not friendly with Google, which is really harmful to our marketing strategy.
As far as I know, it is really a difficult task for us to get our lens (the web pages in Squidoo) indexed by Google.

I think squidoo is really a waste of time. Sometime back I had created a lens on squidoo, after a long 15 minutes of wasting time on all the procedure, it says me that they dont accept my niche sites.

I even posted a lens with different niche, however it still didnot help me at all.

I used Squidoo for long time and have good experience with it. I had some sales from lenses, But from few months Squidoo changes rules and all the internet marketing community is shocked. It happens because some lensemasters just throw junk and promotion material at Squidoo. Now everyone is thinking that lets go to Hubpages! So, the day will come soon when Hubpages will also go Squidoo way. I want to say that while promoting our affiliate links we should have some control on it.

        Both and neither.

If you're going to rely on a 3rd party platform, it's the quality of the content
that's going to make the difference and not the platform itself.

Having said that, if you rely on a 3rd party platform, then you are leaving
yourself at the mercy of the people who control that platform. They can
yank your page at any time without warning.

In the long run, you are better off with your own VRE because then you have
nobody to answer to but your web host and unless you're posting Warez,
racist or some other type of site that some hosts have problems with, you
        should be fine.

The more you control yourself, the better off you will be.

I completely agree with Steven here since it would be like putting all your eggs in someone else's basket. No one will take care of your eggs better than you can (it's the same thing with investing - relying on other people to do it for you is like asking to lose all your money).

On another note, though, you still need link juice, and I have also noticed that Hubs rank a lot better in the Serps. You might also want to check out infobarrel for links because I have noticed that some of my IB articles rank higher than hubs and do so faster.

I think we can walk away with quite a few lessons here....

Just like anything else, diversification is key.....but, I think it's also important for people to be proactive with their analysis and assessments of any websites they are consider writing/submitting content to....

This is such a huge industry, and, let's face it, some of these article submission sites are the most popular websites in the world. That is because they DO work....

But, I do agree about putting all your eggs in one basket....get to know the TOS, FAQs, and even the MO of managment/staffing/community managers....

Both are very helpful for various reasons, but also very complicated because of their rules. If you can follow their rules and accept having unexpected problems sometimes, you may be successful with them.

They are your partners. They decide many things, you may lose your work, etc. However, there are many people making a lot of money with Squidoo lenses and Hub pages, and sending a lot of traffic to their websites through their links.

You should use both for a complementary income and for getting some traffic. Depending on your personal experience, you will see if you can be one of the lucky ones who are making a lot of money with them, or if they will simply help you somehow with your marketing efforts.

I am using both but hubpages proved better for me. Hubs getting ranked easily as compare to my squidoo lenses. Secondly hubs are cached more rapidly as compared to lenses. But still I am using squidoo just for having a nice backlink to my money site

Hubpages: Ranks well, simple to use
Squidoo: Ranks less well, complicated to use

    There's your answer.

But make sure to include other web 2.0 services in your strategy. I find that Wikidot pages rank up nicely.
