Hi about 5 years ago I bought 5 domains and did nothing with them - they had "Coming soon ...." pages until last month when I thought maybe I should put some adwords up - doh!

I've only just got into the whole IM thing and I have bought some long tail keyword domains but decided I should see if I can use the older ones since I've been paying for them for years and hey, hey, hey they're PR3. This must be entirely based on the age. I know it's not fantastic but it's a head start. Unfortunately the domains don't really relate to IM so my question is ....

What is the ranking value of using these PR 3's because although the domain is not based on a keyword the posts will be. Will the search engines look kindly on me or is it a waste of time an effort?

Your advice please.

Age is a definately a factor when it comes to ranking in the SERPs.

You've already got a head start mate. So start developing on those domains ASAP the search engines will give you a domain age PR boost.

Thanks Michael I might just make them something like review sites and make each post a different product and see how that goes. I'll just need to work harder to get the SEO right

The age factor will help once they see an active site on the domain.

Another factor is time to expire. Domains that have less than a few months before expiry can get flagged for a watchlist etc. Make sure to pay a few years on your good domains (something I am just starting to do).

Google rewards seniority big time. Example: A simple blogger blog has been sitting on page 1 for years for a keyword with 20+ million competing sites and about 9 million global monthly searches. The blog is 12+ years old and hasn't been updated since around mid '08. All the while, bigger and better sites out there are nowhere near page 1 for that keyword.

I've heard this could be one of the hundreds of factors in Google's algorithm.

But from personal experience across hundreds of domains, and looking at countless SEO reports by gurus, experts, whoever, I would say this is a complete non-factor.

Age of the domain - yep, I agree - can be important. Although sometimes with age comes links, so aged domains rank better simply because they have developed more, long-lasting links, and not necessarily because of their age.

thanks guys - that's interesting. Looks like I better put them to work. I checked page rank again today and they've all dropped to PR1 since I put adsense on. Obviously the "Website Coming Soon" carried real credibility. Ah well - I guess it won't take long to get the PR3 back with some decent content.

Wouldn't you like to own that blog? 9 million searches? yummy.

the age should stand you in good stead for higher ratings than an average website in your niche.

If I were in your place, definitely I would have started with the Aged Domain. Domain Age is an important factor and Google always gives more value to an old domain. More over your domains are already PR3.
