OpenOffice 3.0 Is Here

Apparently they crashed their servers this morning due to all the demand. But it looks like you can finally download it now. I've been using the 3.0 beta for a little while and it rocks - lots of cool new features, and a new "paint job" to boot!

Thanks for the heads up on this....

Just a quick question - do you use Microsoft office as well?

    Regards

      Microsoft Office? What's that?

I've used it before but it's been a few years. Ever since OpenOffice added all the PDF functionality I've used it almost exclusively for writing/ebooks, etc. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but overall I like it better than M Office.

        Thanks Brandon,

And from a compatibility point of view, do you have any problems
opening up MS Office documents that someone sends to you, especially
        Excel docs?

        Regards

          Greg,

I don't receive many Excel files from others, so I probably wouldn't be the best person to answer that question. I do receive a moderate amount of doc files from others though, and usually they look good, but every now and then I'll get one where the formatting will be a little off and will need a minor tweak or two.

That's in reference to OO 2.x of course. Haven't had time to test out the compatibility of 3.0 yet.

Thanks for pointing this out, I hadn't heard. I used Open Office for a few years but now have gone back to Office. I wouldn't mind giving it another go though.

Nice. If I didn't get MS Office so cheap through the MS Home Use Program, I probably wouldn't bother with it at all.

I *think* it was because I hit run, and not save!

Anyway though, it's up and running!

I had to dump OO a few days ago. Wasn't playing nice with the Mac. I kept getting this time out errora and then it just stopped opening.

I guess it was because of X11 application we got to run in order to use OO. A bit of a pain. I don't have MS Office on the mac. People give MS Office crap but I prefer it over OO. And I've been using OO for a year now on my MacBook Pro.

I've been using Google Docs to write my new report and they made a lot of improvements. You can easily export as PDF and add images now. But I'll give OO another shot now that they have this new version. See if it works. Thanks for the heads up on this release.

Microsoft Word 2007 does everything I need to create documents. I personally think it's easier to create professional looking ebooks with Word then Open Office. The smart art graphics along with all the templates you get with Word are awesome.

Okay I just installed it with the Mac and WOW! What a difference. No more freaking X11 app to run. They must have integrated it or something. Much, much better than the older version. Thanks again for the heads up.

P.S. it took 11 minutes to install so the OSX Intel download link must not be as popular as the Windows one.

I have OpenOffice that you can download probably much faster that you can get it from the OO site as it stored on a S3 powered dropbox.

If you want the link, as I will only keep it online for a day or two, please PM.

Windows OpenOffce 3.0 English version only!

If you would prefer to grab it from the OO site I really recommend using something like GetRight or Lightning Download as the official sites are often timing out.

Heck, I recommend using those for just about any large download.. saves a lot of time.
