DoFollow vs. NoFollow on Blogs

Hey Everyone,

I co-own a blog that provides tips on budgeting. I've been commenting on other personal finance sites hoping to improve SEO traffic. I just found out that Wordpress is a NoFollow template by default and that you have to install a DoFollow plugin.

So if I understand this correctly, when someone comments on a post in a NoFollow site, and create a link from their name to their site, google doesn't actually credit them a backlink? They may get traffic, but no improvement with SEO?

And, if it's DoFollow enabled, they are credited with a backlink?

Any other insights in this area?
Other than CommentLuv are there any other plugins that are beneficial?

Cheers,

Guy

You're credited with a backlink either way. A lot of people will argue with me, but good NoFollow links are just as good as DoFollow. If a site is related to your niche, an authority site that's established, has PR, has traffic, etc... I don't care if it's NoFollow - it's a good place for backlink.

The thing about DoFollow is that it passes "PR Juice" to your site. Which means you could increase your Google Page Rank (that little green bar on Google's toolbar) by commenting on a lot of high PR, DoFollow pages.

Only Google know the true answer, everything else is a subjective opinion. There are arguments for both sides, personally for me I am happy to side with my SEO expert who says they count but have less value than dofollow links.

I have a wordpress blog and people have been commenting as well as asking to do link exchanges.

I just checked by opening up my source online and held down the Ctrl key and then the F key. You will see a box open up, type in nofollow and you will find out whether or not the site is nofollow. Oops. I found one. I guess I will be getting the dofollow plugin.

Sure wish it would stop those spam comments though!

What are you guys talking about?

    Purpose of rel="nofollow"

Any link with this attribute will indicate to search engine robots that the landing page may not be approved by the web site listing this link and therefore the link will not contribute to the link popularity or ranking of the landing page.
    Attribute 'rel=nofollow' | Link Tutorial

There is no corresponding "DOFOLLOW" attribute. It doesn't exist. By default, if you do NOT specify 'rel=nofollow' then that attribute does not apply.

There are tons more references if you search Google for nofollow attribute

I think that if you are trying to promote your site, making it dofollow will help you gain visitors. People are constantly searching for dofollow blogs whether it is better than nofollow or not. You can keep your content fresh because you will be getting comments more often than you would if you had a nofollow blog.

You will have to monitor your comments closely though, dofollow blogs tend to attract spammers.
