Hey,
I'm a private investigator and ever since I've looked into internet marketing its almost always about selling a product, which is good and I will eventually start selling a product. However, I sell services and I want to know more about selling a service online. I provide pre-marital background investigations for several hundred dollars. Although you see background check offers galore on the net they don't come close to providing an extensive thorough, accurate and complete background check. If government agencies, law enforcement agencies, insurance companies, mortgage companies relied on these computer database generated reports alone they would have all kinds of characters in their organization.- When we market offline generally the method we use is ads, among other ways to generate a lead. The leads call in and we try to close them on the service. So my question is what would be the best process online? Do we setup a one page blog or website with our telephone number to call in for more information then sell them? Do we place the cost in the blog or website? Do we try to sell directly from the blog or website. Do we give them a choice of options? -Thank you

a suggestion and something to consider first would be to identify your ideal target market/audience because that's going to be one of the key determining factors for how you actually create and execute your marketing plan.

I would also consider how you can prove that you're different to others who may do the same thing as you do, this is so that what you do can rise above being just a commodity which is based on price alone.

How can people sample what you have to offer in a low-risk way?

When offering services, the risk normally tends to be with the client, so how can you make this different?

Just some thoughts to get you started and I'm sure others will chip in.

Thank you for your response. Just another quick question. Should the fee be anywhere on the sale page or revealed in the consultation? What do you think?

If someone is searching for your service or a similar service they are a buyer. It is not something you idly search for therefore you should sell your service on the page explaining the benefits to the customer of using your specialist service. It is them nerely a question of do you want people phoning you, visiting you or buying tour service online.

Is it local or do you outsource the investigations for other states etc? If it's local you want contact with them via phone, email office visit. If for a wider area then sell the service of the page.

Selling services with a website will benefit from clearly-structured
offers and skilled, benefit oriented copywriting.

You'll need to stake out your territory, traffic wise too.

Risk reversal is a great sales appeal for services. I'd recommend
driving local traffic with print advertising to your website that tells
all about what you do and makes one or more clearly defined
    offers. Ie.

"here's what YOU GET and here's what it costs"

People are not gonna be stumbling on your website, getting off
their butts, and calling you up without some real compelling
    writing on the site.

A blog or static site will do. What matters most is the clarity
and client-centered nature of the message.

Well really essentially in short targeted traffic is probably what will get you the results in want. It's how you're going to get those traffic is the hard part. That's how you're going to get the word out. You need to identify your market as the person above mentioned and try to attract their attention!

I guess the best way you can do this is creating a site and optimizing it with some SEO work and some ads doesn't hurt as well.

There are a whole host of options for you. As for a site or blog. I'm no professional however if I were in your place I'd choose a site over a blog. A blog is sort of more personal where else a site seems more professional in my opinion. So if you're a service or business I'd choose a site.

As for traffic search engine traffic is probably one of the sources you'll be looking for since those people would be searching for some services of your type to stumble onto your site but the thing is you need to know the keywords people would look for to find services you offer and it would also cost quite a bit to get top placing for those keyword if their competitive.

Another options is through ads such as PPC but that can also be costly as well there are many other free options such the person above mentioned word of mouth is very important this can easily be done through social network. You can also do link building and so forth.

    Just some of my thoughts.
    All the Best,
    Benjamin

Don't be coy in your marketing. Nobody likes it. It's okay to quote
jobs based on the size, but a price range posted in your marketing
material will get you more serious inquiries from qualified prospects.

When you quote a price range some people will come to you assuming
their project will be at the lowest price on your range.... it just
    goes with the territory.
