Getting Started With Facebook & Twitter

Hey Guys,

I am a relative newbie and wanted some advice on how to get started on Facebook and Twitter.

I have an Aweber list and would like to get some more subscribers via Facebook and Twitter. I was just putting it out there to see whether any members could give me any tips.

Thanks,

Rich

    Couple of tips for you.

For Twitter, find people that are talking about things you are interested in and join in on the conversations. Don't spam or hit them with sales pitches, look to build relationships.

For Facebook, same kind of thing but make sure you create custom business/fan pages as well.

I read a book called Twitterville that is pretty good. It mentions how businesses have used twitter to gain millions in business. The takeaway I got was add valueable content and see where the loopholes are in your competition. For example, Jet blue realized customers were twittering no flights coming out of a particular city as passengers were stranded so they re-routed their planes and captured business from another airline.

As more and more people become "Twitter savvy" you have to be very careful with the messages you send.

      Spammers are ignored quickly!

Build relationships and gain trust. You'll notice things pick up.

I really don't think that getting a huge amount of followers is a slam dunk right now, because most of them will just be IMers looking to add to their number profile as well > which is just a sham because of the proliferation of automated software. It just ends up that you are tweeting each other clickbank links and your Twitter experience will turn into a waste of time.

Think of this as a long term strategy where you get a few QUALITY followers every day, by actively searching for them and connecting with them for a specific reason. Honestly, I would take a Twitter user that has only 50-100 followers (but Tweets often) any day over an IMer that has 40,000+ followers.

One of the reasons why I described here:

Groups and Fan pages work well.

Create a group/page with something that would make users curious.

"You wouldn't believe what this person said"

Using Twitter and Facebook are great ways to promote your site and increase traffic to your own site. However, I can not stress enough that we need to approach the use of social media sites with a goal and a plan in mind. Why? Simple, most people are there to socialize and if you start adding friends and followers without seeing if they have similar interests then you will be wasting your valuable time. Only accept people that have interests in networking, internet, technology or whatever your niche is. Keep in mind that although you do want to build a relationship and trust you want to set yourself some limits and establish boundaries. Otherwise you will get caught up in the socializing frenzy and never achieve your goal.

Now, I know some people have mentioned software in order to grow your followers or friends faster, but I have my reservations (as I do with most software). Twitter for example has been making a lot of changes in their rules about tweeting and about followers, as well as posting ads. So you want to make sure you read through the rules first. If you do not want to, or have the time to grow your lists yourself then outsource. There are plenty of people who would do this for a small fee. HOWEVER, do explain the project clearly, especially since you wan to avoid being accused of spam when you are just beginning. Good luck
