Most prefer to go with a .net, then a .org.

.info doesn't hold much value with Google anymore because they are so cheap and spammers like to buy them up and bulk to throw up pages for the sole purpose of making money.

If the .com is taken I will, personally, look first at the .org and then the .net. For me it seems that .org ranks better then my .net sites, but it can be a coincidence.

I also find that .org is slightly ahead of .net these days, but there are other considerations. For instance, will a person be more likely to click on a listing if it's shown as a .net or a .org? Sometimes you may actually be losing potential visitors even if placed higher. Bottom line, as always, is testing.

  • .org's are the next best. In fact, I go straight for the .org even if the .com is taken. I can compete and beat .com's within the same niche/keyword

It is amazing the amount of wieght the .org holds.

This might be a dumb question but is it ok to have a .org site even if your site doesn't represent an organization? I'm guessing it doesn't matter but I thought I'd ask.

.net was originally for network providers. Yet, plenty of non-network providers have them.

The same goes for .org. It was originally for non-commercial use.

There was no enforcement way back when. More or less, companies and organizations were expected to just use the most appropriate gTLD for themselves. As commercial interest grew, people began grabbing domain names left and right and, when .com began to "run out", people began to grab .net's and .org's.

As it is now, .com, .net and .org are essentially unrestricted as to their registration and use.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I typically only go for the .com, if its not available as I was looking for I add a - to change it up without loosing the keyworded domain I was looking for. Also, Domain Samuari is free I love using it to pick new domains, just a suggestion

Yes this is ok, their original design was intended for organisations, however no-one listens to that anymore. The ranking of extensions in terms of strength is .com, .org and .net, I wouldn't even touch .info, it just spells scammer to google. Just think about the last time you saw a .info domain name rank highly?
