Clickbank Courtesy Questions

I've just noticed you can get the e-mail of people who buy a product through your clickbank link. Now, would it be courteous to send an e-mail thanking them from buying from me, in the hopes of a return customer. Or would that be an invasion of privacy?

Your personal thoughts.

I see no reason that is an issue at all. What I would suggest is that you do thank them and then tell to check out some other free offer or something that would benefit them. If you provide great value, generally people will be happy to hear from you.

I don't see why that wouldn't be appropriate. Everyone likes to be thanked. Plus, like raygun said, its another opportunity to upsell

    That depends on the niche.

For anything in the IM niche.....it would be fine because 95% of us know and understand what's going on when we buy a product.

HOWEVER...outside of that, most people probably don't even have a clue that they just purchased a product through an aff. link and would be confused, and a little freaked out when you email them and thank them for buying some else's product through your link.

    Me personally...I wouldn't bother unless it's IM.

There isn't really much I could offer for free in this niche. Maybe a free ebook somehow relating to the topic, but I don't really see it. I can picture this working for other niches though.

True, but I'm still a little hesitant.

I didn't think of that. The non-IM'ers getting a little freaked out I mean.
Another reason I asked the question here is because, I didn't really want to email someone who bought a product through me that I didn't create. Incase I came off as spammy, or they wanted advice that I just don't have. Making me come off as sorta shady.

Thanks for your answers, But I think I'll stick with what Ken said. I hope the answers here help anyone else in a similar situation.

      Cheers,

      -Aidan.

I wouldnt be so sure whether this within CB TOS. I never thought about this before, but i dont think you can simply use those emails and try to upsell to them?

I wasn't thinking in terms of upselling as I was typing out the question. I was more interested in giving a 'thank you' email to the customer, therefore building some trust (and also thanking them out of courtesy, ofcourse). Hopefully down the track, leading to further sales through my affiliate link.

I can't see why it would be against their TOS. Why would they provide you with a one-click way of sending an email to the buyer?

Though not in the TOS the ClickBank view is that affiliates
should not be allowed to follow up with customers as these
        "belong" to the publisher.

What Harvey is saying is very well true with any payment processor. The 'relationship' is established with the vendor, since they are the one selling the product.

BTW, doesn't someone have to opt-in with you before you start emailing them? Isn't it plain old spam if you email them without them opting in?
Not necessarily. I did some research on this when I first stared with email subscriptions as related to the CAN-SPAM laws. The way I read it was if the person purchases a product, then a relationship is established that sets the stage for future follow ups. I have had this happen with online retail purchases I have made with offline businesses.

The criteria is that as long as I include a physical mail address and unsubscribe link, then I meet the requirements. I may be wrong, so if someone has clarification on this, post away.

At this point, I use single optin for buyers, have been doing it for several years, and have had no problems. If they want to unsubscribe, which some have, they can do so no problem..

One thing I do is use the follow up email as a straight thank you for buying, make sure all is well and provide a support link if there is a problem. I have gone to a second email that follows up to make sure all is well and if there are questions to contact me.

          Neither email sells anything.

After that, it's on with business.

          So far, so good.

          Thanks,

          John

As a newbie marketer, I get bombarded with emails from different marketers constantly when I opt-in for a report.

As someones else mentioned, being in marketing, I understand what's happened. But as a consumer, it pisses me off. It's too much! I am constantly unsubscribing myself from people's lists. So what is the benefit of sending an uninvited thank you email and trying to upsell?

I would suggest not to send a thank you email, no matter the niche. Not if you are acting as an affiliate behind the scenes.

BTW, doesn't someone have to opt-in with you before you start emailing them? Isn't it plain old spam if you email them without them opting in?

As you can see this is a hot issue for me right now...

I am hoping to find a way to market without emailing people to death!

So, after all these responses what have you decided?

I know it's hard to believe, but I wanted to send the buyer a genuine 'thank you' email. No upsells, I wouldn't add them to any list, no marketing on my behalf whatsoever.

Just letting them know they're appreciated as a customer. Hopefully resulting in a future sale with them. Because we all know how much the internet is ful of crap, so when you find someone you can trust, you really want to stick with them.

Yet still, I'm not going to go through with it. The negatives may not be worth the positives. Negative being my reputation could be worsened, and I'd be branded as a spammer. Positives ofcourse being future sales.

Ah well, another lesson learned in the IM business. Cheers everyone.
