Double opt-in for the IM niche

Hey warriors,

I am a firm believer in single opt-ins for non IM niches since most prospects are not internet savvy. But how about for the IM niche? I've never marketed to this crowd so I don't know how many of them do actually click on the confirmation link.

Has any of you run some previous split test in the past?

TIA!

    Hi guys

i wouldn't have a list without double opt in as it only takes one person to complain that you are spamming them and you are in trouble.

It depends also what is more important to you:

1 - lots of numbers on your list with double opting in
2 - a low success rate in mailings

as the second is what happens with single opt in because many people mistype their email address and you will be stuck with their email address. At least with a double opt in you know for sure that they are real.

    kind regards

I currently use Infusionsoft for my autoresponder and with
them it's possible to fully tailor the confirmation e-mail -
the subject line, the body copy and the confirmation URL.

That way, I make the confirmation URL the actual link to
the freebie, e.g. PDF report, video, etc and the body copy
      only talks about the freebie.

This way, although it's a double opt-in process, to the
visitor it flows and looks like single opt-in.

This is way better than the butt ugly confirmation e-mails
of the Response Required variety that are a speed bump
      that hurts conversions.

In the IM niche, I prefer to use double opt-in - but that's
down to personal choice rather than my own split test
      results.

I want a full confirmation path to protect my list long term.

I know that other people prefer single opt-in, even within
      IM.

With Infusionsoft, I can have my cake and eat it.

      Dedicated to your success,

      Shaun

In the IM niche I'd go double optin (I do on other niches too) because it's the guys in this niche who are savvy about can spam.

Here's an example - I hosted a list on my own server and the cron job wasn't set up properly so when you tried to unsubscribe you got an error.

In the non-IM niche I got a polite email telling me that they couldn't unsubscribe as the link was broken and could I remove their name as they didn't want to receive any more emails.

In the IM niche I got a nasty email threatening to report me for spam because the unsub list was broken.

I've since switched to Aweber so i don't have to worry about stuff like that

If you are thinking long-term, building a quality list of people who have confirmed they want to hear from you is so important. I use Aweber and personalize the confirmation message to ensure that prospects understand the reason that the confirmation is necessary.

Occasionally they will opt out after they receive whatever gift I am offering - they are perhaps the more internet savvy ones, but mostly they stay on board. They will remain on your list for as long as you provide them with quality information.

So, short answer - yes, double opt in for IM.
