    Not really - it depends what their reason is.

    The customer isn't always right, but they certainly deserve to be heard...

    Do do it. In fact, don't even enable that 'reason for unsubscribe' function - it will drive you crazy.

    For every email I send out, I get replies from people who loved the email and from people who had a problem with it.

    I've sent out emails in the past that had nothing but valuable content and still got complaints. People like to complain and misery loves company.

    You can not please everyone no matter what you do. Focus on your customers, not freebie seekers who unsubscribe.

        Also, I think that you need to remove anything that gives the possibility of negative feedback - doing so leaves the door open for a new subscription.

          If a agree to mail my list about your product in return for you mailing your list about me, how does that sorta flaunt the wont share lend or give info to anyone?

          Often tempted..but never do...

          Got one yesterday... "great info but too busy to take action" ..

          also got one a few days back from the first email i sent out with the download link.

          which said "too many emails"


          I actually used to take it personally but now I look at it as I've weeded out the time wasters who just want free stuff...

          I sometimes do get "revenge" if i get a particularly nasty one by just adding a few extras to the next email that goes out.... that will teach them

            I've got great feedback from unsubscribe comments - both positive and negative - that has helped me improve sites. I can definitely see the opinion of turn it off, but on the other hand it can be a great way to get feedback and suggestions if you are delivering what you promise to your list.

            If you're not delivering what you promise then of course you are going to get a lot of angry feedback.

          Once they unsubscribe they are not a subscriber anymore. You can sell their email to anyone and not violate your promise...

    No, I don't take it personally. Generally I look at the overall number of subscribes (and positive responses) for a mailing and any pattern of complaints. And while I may consider what one person says (to see if their feedback makes sense), I don't worry much what one person said when they unsubscribed.

    Plus, it's not a good idea to respond to the outrageous comments -- those are probably trolls looking for a response. And it's not a good idea to respond negatively to the straightforward, honest comments -- because that person is still a potential customer.

    Think about it...

    Many of the folks who don't intend to ever do business with you just leave -- silently. They don't really care what you do with your business because they don't intend to be a part of it. So they don't leave feedback.

    However, someone who takes the time to leave constructive feedback cares. They care about your business, because they might want to do business with you again.

    But one snarky comment from the mailing list owner and they might be out the door forever.

      Why bother? You did your job and weeded them out.

      That is what we do, right?

      Get people into your sales funnel and weed out the non buyers so you have a list of buyers that you can sell to over and over again.

        I agree. If they take offence when you send out an email, they're not the customer.

        What would you think of someone who keeps going to a shop but never buys anything?

        Would you miss them if they stop coming?

    I just unsubscribed from 2 mailing lists the other day and (I think for the first time ever) left feedback as to the reason why.

    Not sure if either of the list owners looked at it or if they did, whether they'll do anything with it.

    If someone unsubscribes from my list then I know they are completely insane, so why would it bother me if my newsletter isn't welcomed by a crazy person? After all, I target highly evolved individuals, not the insane.

    Seriously, you can't please everyone, but trying to is a sure path to failure. Not everyone is going to like you online or offline, that's just the way it is. Take what you can learn from the comments you receive and forget the rest.

    If you let a subscriber's comment bother you, you're giving them way to much power over your emotions.

    The only reason I have unsubscribed is my inbox gets to full and I cut out the lists that are not sending winners all the time. I would rather see one winning email (content) per year than 15 useless "Be sure to check out this site with a free report that everyone else has already sent me" emails.

    As a side note, I tend to stay on lists that offer direct video content without having to sign up for another list (I can listen to them while I work) such as Frank Kern's stuff.

    No, especially if they're telling me something I need to hear. If anything I try to take that feedback and make sure I never get that same kind again. If I'm sending too often, then I want someone to let me know...even if it means I lose a subscriber. Better one lost than hundreds.
