Have 1 Domain
Setup Wordpress on a Folder (specific for a niche)
Then set up another Folder (specific for another niche)
and so on

So example:
domain.com/golf
domain.com/painting
etc...

This will entail multiple Wordpress installs and I assume use the same Wordpress Database, or create new wordpress.

Anyone ever do this?

Creating multiple blogs on a domain is feasible if done correctly. I prefer subdomains personally .. so golf.domain.com , painting.domain.com .. I'll only ever use related topics.. so for example vegetables.gardeningdomain.com , flowers.gardeningdomain.com, etc..

Either way will use separate databases

Anyone see issues especially with BIG G, with domains such as:
    com--ebay.com
    etc...

so when you create a subdomain it looks like:
    paper.com--ebay.com

    etc..

I'd much rather use a multi-domain capable CMS than create a new Wordpress installation for each topic I'd like to base a site on.

Yeah - trademark infringement. ebay have shut down several sites with their name in them, though there are some quite long term sites around still.

But if your going to register a domain with a trademark in it, you should realise that you may get a letter sooner rather than later.

“Yeah,” reply the bytes. “Make us a double.”

Yeah, I guess buying a domain is cheap enough and better for ranking I guess

Having separate domains is not only good for ranking (main reason). It will be easier for the visitors to view you as an expert. You can build your brand with different characteristics and personality to your different niches as well. Try to imagine how you would feel as having TEACHER.COM: Your TEACHER Expert Since 1998.. .

    Just my own opinion buddy.

I'd love to put my wordpress blog directly on my main domain so that the address bar would display as mysite.com as opposed to mysite.com/wordpress but every time I try and change anything something gets screwed up. I'm not even sure if what I want to do is even possible.

I know I used to do this quite a bit a few years back but not with WP blogs, and that was before Google existed. Others did as well.

The reason for it was quite simple. Domains and hosting cost a lot back then, so everyone got the most out of their domains.

Now that domains and hosting are easily aquired by most people, it is better to put blogs up on main domains or top level. It is better with Google too if you depend on a traffic boost from them.

Personally, I think it sends really mixed signals to your visitors - ie, "How much of an expert can this guy be if his golf site is hosted on a domain called bestebooks.com?" The only way I can think of pulling it off is if your main domain is something like howstuffworks.com or lifeexplained.com that would be more generic and apply to several different niches.

But then again, domains and hosting are so cheap right now, plus the ranking benefits from having a more tightly targeted site. I'd invest in a new domain for each niche, but that's just me

Well i think it depends on your overall strategy. If you are building an authority site, then creating sub domains is ok. But if you are looking to just create a landing page or a simple salespage then invest in in a new domain for each new niche.
