My Article Gets 600 Uniques to My Site Each Month From a #3 Posistion in Google...but...

The interesting thing is that if you do keyword research with this keyword (using google's kw tool) it says that I shouldn't be getting any visitors. Yet I am in the number 3 spot and this article submitted to EA is giving me 300 opt-ins per month.

It goes to show as we all know that there is no truly accurate kw tool. However, it also shows that there are kw's that are supposed to only get a few hundred visitors per month and they might get a thousand. I usually like to round down the searches so I don't get my hopes up so high. But in some cases you're pleasantly surprised as in this case where you get a lot more searches than you're supposed too.

Btw, this is why I put a few backlinks to every kw article I write. Sure it takes a little extra time and effort. But to me it's worth it to be in spots 1-3 to know if this kw really will get any extra traffic.

I too have noticed that google under-reports keyword traffic. I have some keywords that bring in 200-300 uniques a day and on the keyword tool it shows 50 searches a month. I am not sure if it's intentionally skewed or just flawed but I've noticed the same results.

Or just run a PPC campaign and see the impressions you get over a week.

This is the best strategy if you want more detailed information. Just keep in mind that you may or may not get listed in all the countries of your PPC campaign, and that the top results are becoming more and more dynamic.

Or just say that you want to be listed in all countries and you will be seen in all countries which adwords allows. Explain by what you mean, more dynamic.

That's not unusual. Dont forget that you may also be getting traffic from Yahoo and Bing. In one of my sites, the majority of visitors come from Yahoo.

could the issue be that Google only tracks average google searches, but, of course, there are plenty of other search engines out there as well?

I have my pages ranking on 3rd page of google for 5k monthly searches and gets 100 UV monthly which is quite impressive but the SEO experts says that people don't go beyond first page with below 10k searches.

Noticed the same thing myself, comparing google ads impressions
    and the KW tool statistics.

    I second to butters,
I think running a PPC campaign and checking the impressions
    is far more accurate.

I wonder if google is doing it by "accident"

google will never tell you the correct number of monthly searches nor will it tell you how many backlinks your site has. It is intentionally done by google to avoid predictability

I have noticed this same phenomenon ....Google's own keyword research tool can be all over the map. Fewer and fewer times do I see it as very predictive.

I agree it does help out to an extent sometimes but dont bank the house on it. I like to think of a keyword phrase that is related to my article and see how much competition their is for that keyword phrase on the first page of Google.

If I see articles on the first page with a lot of paid ads its a winner, I will then try to go after that keyword phrase! Try to beat out your competition and take the number 1 spot over.
