Web 3.0 coming into action!

What the? Seriously, what is Web3.0? Gimme an example.

If you take all those gurus using buzzwords seriously, we should be at Web 7.0 by now
Come on, people...

I don't see that happening in reality, it would be a logistical nightmare to setup.

Well, I expect, that the web 3.0 will actually, have to define itself, most people still dont know what the web 2.0 was about,

They actually still think it was about graphics, and social networking sites.

That is really funny, when in reality, the web 2.0 was all about the programming that made those websites possible, it is always about what you cant see, not what you can see, so when 3.0 does get here, you wont see it.

I don't really understand the point. Why do it all at one site when you can easily navigate to a few specialized sites? Maybe that question will sound dumb in 10 years, but I can't think of the advantage right now .

I'm not interested in a single portal controlling all of my activity. That's one reason I'm not a slobbering fanatic of Apple, and would rather wait for the Slate or other tablet offerings.

So WHAT does Web 2.0 mean?

1. NOTHING, just an idiots short term for some websites they think are neat.
2. NOTHING, just AJAX enabled.
3. NOTHING, just B2B enabledl, never mind that many #1 were like this.
4. NOTHING, just a group of sites fitting some sites that people have DECIDED to call web 2.0, like sociall networking sites.

So what do I think of Web 2.0? NOTHING! It is a STUPID HYPED UP term just to try to sound like a big shot!

Others here are right! If Web 2.0 was NOTHING, and not defined, how can you even claim web 3.0 exists!?!?!? HOW is it different from what I just described? I have seen a lot of FANCY sites. MOST may be able to lay claim to ALL 4 above! So when will THEY go web 3.0? HOW will it be different?

Forget the silly buzz words and concentrate on what works. I know staying ahead of the game is good but web2.0 (if you know what it is) has ONLY just started.

I must have missed the memo. Were there any upgrades to Web 2.0? Like Web 2.1 or Web 2.5?

Well I went to an event last year and there were a few Guru's there...they were talking about web 3.0 and how it will be the next platform as I explained in the first post! There are a couple of sites out there not doing it as I sat through a webinar of one a few days ago on how it will work. (sorry can't post links). Anyway was just wondering about it that's all.

There may be some hyped up guru talk going on, but its not in the cards, for that kind of concept to catch on, it is a good topic,

but like I said its always the programming that makes things work, not how they look.

I agree with previous posts. Not that many people have even noticed "Web 2.0" so what's to say that we're already on the path to Web 3.0?

To me, a central website for everything doesn't seem like the best idea.

I'm going back to Web 1.0 and calling it the Retro Revolution. Who's with me?

In reality i think web 2.0 is all we need, servers would crash and i don't think it would be very viable for the everyday user.
does anyone have any examples? it would still be pretty cool to see!

Web 1.0... Web 2.0... Web 3.0... what is next? Web XP?

For YEARS I used a hardwired desktop....the day I went to a laptop and wireless was the day I thought I had found Web 2.0..

I upgraded to web 2.5 and while I like many of the new features I found the interface to be overwhelming at times. It's also not quite as stable as 2.4 but I hear there is a new web 2.5.0.1 patch coming out really soon to take care of some of the issues.

Now this is an interesting discussion.

I like the K.I.S.S. principle so I'll keep this succinct.

Web 1.0 describes content consumption only websites.

Web 2.0 describes websites that allow user-generated content. It really has nothing to do with the actual technology used to implement it.

Web 3.0 describes websites focused on intelligent content storage and retrieval.

Web 1.0 = HTML

Web 2.0 = XML

Web 3.0 = WTF

WEB 2:

The term is closely associated with Tim O'Reilly because of the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to cumulative changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the Web. Web 3

Internet experts think Web 3.0 is going to be like having a personal assistant who knows practically everything about you and can access all the information on the Internet to answer any question. Many compare Web 3.0 to a giant database. While Web 2.0 uses the Internet to make connections between people, Web 3.0 will use the Internet to make connections with information. Some experts see Web 3.0 replacing the current Web while others believe it will exist as a separate network.

So if you want to go on a holiday it will search your fares, accommodation, places to see all with one question rather than multiple searches.

Don't they really already have the ability to do this? If so wouldn't that make it another take on 2.0 not a new version to be labeled 3.0?

Had to join WF just to give my opinion on this (as a tech enthusiast, teacher, programmer and web developer).

Web 2.0 = The Web as a platform (RIA - Rich Internet Applications) / The Social Web
Web 3.0 = The Semantic Web: Letting machines understand human meaning by using meta data (and lots of it). Making it easy for scraping valuable information, re-purposing and repackaging it for ubiquitous access.

Just integrating Twitter, Digg, Skype, Facebook, OpenID, etc. on your site does not mean you're even close to Web 3.0.

A better example (I can't do this yet btw): I'm at an airport with nothing but my iPhone. I fire up my RSS app, it knows where I am and what I usually look at based on similar locations (other airports), it knows what time it is and what kind of information I usually like to look at in that time period. Thus, it looks through my RSS feeds and pushes the relevant information to the top. If I look at an article and I star it, the app sends a signal to another service that will go of and find similar articles (maybe 5 others), package it nicely into an easily printable (and online viewable) package, which my home computer will simply download and have it waiting for me when I get back.

And that's just the RSS component of my life... what about doing similar things for whenever anyone mentions my name/brand on the Internet (on Twitter, blogs, etc)? What if, when my brand is found it does background research on the person who mentioned my brand... giving me their influence factor, credibility and contact details.

And all these things possible because valuable metadata is integrated into normal HTML documents.

At the moment I am looking at the semantic web (so called web3.0) and its applications in education (and it is huge!). I haven't even begun to look at its impact it will have on online marketing - although, Google uses its semantic information on a daily basis to inject our ads into AdWords and into GMail (and has been doing so for a long time). Not a true semantic web application, but only a small example of what is possible.

It's pathetic that these version numbers even exist because all it is doing is creating false buzz. If you ever EVER hear a web developer say "I can make your site Web 3.0", FIRE HIM!
