Web 3.0 coming into action!

I know it's coming and some sites are already popping up...what do you guys think of the whole theory of being able to do absolutely everything from one website eg. Online secured banking, Social Networking, Secured Online Shopping...

I see some of those sites are already heading into the MlM/Affiliate buzz too.

Web3.0 means that SOME company (Google) will dominate the internet. People will only use ONE site/portal and not nine hundred "social sites" anymore.

      Oh that makes sense though.

But seriously I haven't heard of Web 3.0 yet and I guess it will become even better in the next couple of years once it's already in the open. SEO at the same time could get a little tighter so research, learning and testing comes on a never-ending process.

Well, I expect, that the web 3.0 will actually, have to define itself, most people still dont know what the web 2.0 was about,

They actually still think it was about graphics, and social networking sites.

That is really funny, when in reality, the web 2.0 was all about the programming that made those websites possible, it is always about what you cant see, not what you can see, so when 3.0 does get here, you wont see it.

If I remember right, either the term Web 1.1 or 1.2 was coined at a oreilly seminar in California. However he was up in arms that people were using his term. Hence, Web 2.0 came along, not his term right?

But yes it is all about functionality and what we expect from a website. It really is not about graphics. Remember those annoying spinning balls that everyone just had to put on their website? Was that pre-web 0.1 ?

I don't really understand the point. Why do it all at one site when you can easily navigate to a few specialized sites? Maybe that question will sound dumb in 10 years, but I can't think of the advantage right now .

So WHAT does Web 2.0 mean?

    1. NOTHING, just an idiots short term for some websites they think are neat.
    2. NOTHING, just AJAX enabled.
    3. NOTHING, just B2B enabledl, never mind that many #1 were like this.
    4. NOTHING, just a group of sites fitting some sites that people have DECIDED to call web 2.0, like sociall networking sites.

So what do I think of Web 2.0? NOTHING! It is a STUPID HYPED UP term just to try to sound like a big shot!

Others here are right! If Web 2.0 was NOTHING, and not defined, how can you even claim web 3.0 exists!?!?!? HOW is it different from what I just described? I have seen a lot of FANCY sites. MOST may be able to lay claim to ALL 4 above! So when will THEY go web 3.0? HOW will it be different?

Well I went to an event last year and there were a few Guru's there...they were talking about web 3.0 and how it will be the next platform as I explained in the first post! There are a couple of sites out there not doing it as I sat through a webinar of one a few days ago on how it will work. (sorry can't post links). Anyway was just wondering about it that's all.

There are only TWO standard "platforms". HTTPS and JSP! you can call anything else a "platform" but, if it isn't actually a standard you can build on, can you call it a PLATFORM? You know, a couple of idiots decided to rename an *******OLD******** method with cutesy names.(one is basically an elaboration of the other) It is based on an idea that is centuries old, implemented in computers since perhaps day one, and implemented in DBMS's since day one. But THEY gave them cutesy NAMES, and wrote tons of books! I STILL can't believe that they pulled it off!

BTW if you took 99% of ALL people that have been members on tis site, they STILL might not have the following, etc... of either of THOSE two "gurus". And the SICK part is I can't say anything against them because, in my industry, it would be like going in a popular Christian church, and saying something against Jesus or GOD! And comparing the two is like the old seinfeld eposides where they compare superman to batman, etc...

MY GOD, I was doing stuff like that with ISAM BEFORE most companies used dbms systems! In fact, BEFORE ORACLE existed as oracle! HECK, probably before Oracle was even first released. And YEARS before the main guy that amazon.com calls a "visionary". VISIONARY!?!?!? BULL!!!!!!! Of course, my father did it before I did. HE claims to have actually written IBMs first ISAM implementation, so who knows. One website says IBM first provided that commercially no later than 1973, which predates all of the above and even Microsoft.

WEB 2.0 is apparently the same sort of thing! JUST HYPE!

OK, so Web 2.0 came out practically at the same time as Web 1.0. So what were they talking about when the mentioned web 2.0?

And Web 3.0 came out a while ago, and will be HISTORY once facebook and twitter are gone!

Now this is an interesting discussion.

I like the K.I.S.S. principle so I'll keep this succinct.

Web 1.0 describes content consumption only websites.

Web 2.0 describes websites that allow user-generated content. It really has nothing to do with the actual technology used to implement it.

Web 3.0 describes websites focused on intelligent content storage and retrieval.

Here's a wiki explanation.Take note of the last sentence

The term is closely associated with Tim O'Reilly because of the O'Reilly Media[2][3] Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to cumulative changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the Web. Whether Web 2.0 is qualitatively different from prior web technologies has been challenged by World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, who called the term a "piece of jargon"[4] -- precisely because he specifically intended the Web to embody these values in the first place.

Next month is the 20th birthday of the worldwide web. You can read about it here.

    WEB 2:

The term is closely associated with Tim O'Reilly because of the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to cumulative changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the Web. (wikipedia)

    Web 3

Internet experts think Web 3.0 is going to be like having a personal assistant who knows practically everything about you and can access all the information on the Internet to answer any question. Many compare Web 3.0 to a giant database. While Web 2.0 uses the Internet to make connections between people, Web 3.0 will use the Internet to make connections with information. Some experts see Web 3.0 replacing the current Web while others believe it will exist as a separate network.

So if you want to go on a holiday it will search your fares, accommodation, places to see all with one question rather than multiple searches.

There is a great article on How Stuff Works outlining much of the material around Web 3.

Don't they really already have the ability to do this? If so wouldn't that make it another take on 2.0 not a new version to be labeled 3.0?

Interesting article on Web 3.0 I thought I would share :-)

You've decided to go see a movie and grab a bite to eat afterward. You're in the mood for a comedy and some incredibly spicy Mexican food. Booting up your PC, you open a Web browser and head to Google to search for theater, movie and restaurant information. You need to know which movies are playing in the theaters near you, so you spend some time reading short descriptions of each film before making your choice. Also, you want to see which Mexican restaurants are close to each of these theaters. And, you may want to check for customer reviews for the restaurants. In total, you visit half a dozen Web sites before you're ready to head out the door.

Some Internet experts believe the next generation of the Web -- Web 3.0 -- will make tasks like your search for movies and food faster and easier. Instead of multiple searches, you might type a complex sentence or two in your Web 3.0 browser, and the Web will do the rest. In our example, you could type "I want to see a funny movie and then eat at a good Mexican restaurant. What are my options?" The Web 3.0 browser will analyze your response, search the Internet for all possible answers, and then organize the results for you.
    *
That's not all. Many of these experts believe that the Web 3.0 browser will act like a personal assistant. As you search the Web, the browser learns what you are interested in. The more you use the Web, the more your browser learns about you and the less specific you'll need to be with your questions. Eventually you might be able to ask your browser open questions like "where should I go for lunch?" Your browser would consult its records of what you like and dislike, take into account your current location and then suggest a list of restaurants.

Had to join WF just to give my opinion on this (as a tech enthusiast, teacher, programmer and web developer).

Web 2.0 = The Web as a platform (RIA - Rich Internet Applications) / The Social Web
Web 3.0 = The Semantic Web: Letting machines understand human meaning by using meta data (and lots of it). Making it easy for scraping valuable information, re-purposing and repackaging it for ubiquitous access.

Just integrating Twitter, Digg, Skype, Facebook, OpenID, etc. on your site does not mean you're even close to Web 3.0.

A better example (I can't do this yet btw): I'm at an airport with nothing but my iPhone. I fire up my RSS app, it knows where I am and what I usually look at based on similar locations (other airports), it knows what time it is and what kind of information I usually like to look at in that time period. Thus, it looks through my RSS feeds and pushes the relevant information to the top. If I look at an article and I star it, the app sends a signal to another service that will go of and find similar articles (maybe 5 others), package it nicely into an easily printable (and online viewable) package, which my home computer will simply download and have it waiting for me when I get back.

And that's just the RSS component of my life... what about doing similar things for whenever anyone mentions my name/brand on the Internet (on Twitter, blogs, etc)? What if, when my brand is found it does background research on the person who mentioned my brand... giving me their influence factor, credibility and contact details.

And all these things possible because valuable metadata is integrated into normal HTML documents.

At the moment I am looking at the semantic web (so called web3.0) and its applications in education (and it is huge!). I haven't even begun to look at its impact it will have on online marketing - although, Google uses its semantic information on a daily basis to inject our ads into AdWords and into GMail (and has been doing so for a long time). Not a true semantic web application, but only a small example of what is possible.

It's pathetic that these version numbers even exist because all it is doing is creating false buzz. If you ever EVER hear a web developer say "I can make your site Web 3.0", FIRE HIM!
