Did you back up your hard drive?

A friend of mine just lost their main drive. Nothing backed up. The awesome drivesavers were able to get 97% recovery - and were' talking several years professional work here... but at the cost of.... over $2500.

Most people only learn to back up, it seems, after the first major catastrophe. Trust me, hard drives can crap out any time.

Did you back up your hard drive?

Yeah I agree it is so important to do this. I just backed mine up last week. Also cleared everything off my laptop and onto the external hard drive! The other problem is that eventually your external hard drive may need to be replaced...thats another problem in itself.

Yeah- we get these threads occasionally where people lose a lot of stuff and then post here to remind others to back up.

The problem is - so many new people join here that there are always people who didn't see the message and don't learn the lesson until they get the problem.

    Thanks for the reminder.

I actually have several pcs, several external hard disks and several hosting providers, so I have lots of backups

Definitely a great reminder. I just backed mine up last week due to having to do a reinstall. I just copied all my main files I needed including software install files. You can use some services that will keep a backup for you too, like Norton.

        A good strategy can be:
        1) backup your main Hard disk to an external HD
        2) backup the most important files from the external HD to another HD
        3) last, to be sure backup the most most important files into a DVD (and move those dvds in another places!)
        But, it takes time...
So I'm using only the action of first point..
You can use also online storage system (like Amazon), but I've never used them.

I back up my PC's every week, sometimes more then once a week.

    Just did yesterday

But last year had a major problem in one machine and lost very important material.

It can be tedious to do this 2 times per week BUT it has to be done, right?

Any software to help us here?

I back up my pc's and laptop around 3 times a week.. Last time my HD went and I wasnt backing up at the time... I popped it into the freezer (all sealed of course) and managed to recover 95% of the data back off it

The old freezer trick does actually work...

I do routine backups. My favorite tool by far is Acronis True Image. Scheduled backups to external devices or to the network are great. Get it, you won't be sorry.

I use Vista Ultimate and it comes with the ability to back-up
my entire hard drive as one image file.

So if I do have a full HD failure, all I need to do is use Vista
Ultimate to place the image file on the new HD - so no
programs need to be re-installed, etc.

Essentially, it places an exact copy of the working drive on
        the new HD.

I back-up my hard drive every Sunday to an external HD.

I also back-up more vital files onto a SanDisk thumb drive
        (e.g. Outlook, RoboForm, vital documents).

And I have an online back-up with Carbonite that's very
        easy to use.

So, I've got online and offline back-ups to protect my
        business.

I'll probably add some DVD back-ups into the mix too just
        to be more bulletproof.

Yup, backing up is important. Keep a copy in the safety deposit box or keep it somewhere other then your home or office where the computer is.

    Cheers,

I do a full backup every 2 weeks which might be a bit too long but I have have a computer crash and I lost 2 months of stuff on it that I had to re-due. That sucked.

So I now have it on a couple of different HD's.

I like the program Exe files though. I never thought to grab those.

This is a great reminder, especially for those of us that are keeping all of our memories (pictures, videos, etc.) on hard-drives. I have quite a few external hard-drives that I rotate out to different family members w/ the memories stuff on it. They appreciate receiving it, and it's a great way to back it all up.

Having found out the hard way the importance of regular back-ups, I now use a nifty piece of freeware from 2BrightSparks called Syncback.

I think I may have an external HD addiction.

    1: 500 GB
    1: 250 GB
    1: 1 TB

Have been tempted by a 2 TB version I saw in an ad the other day lol

My addiction will save my a$$ in the future, I'm sure of it. (keep telling yourself that, you need that 2TB James, you need it.)
