The Tunnel Vision Trap

The other day I got into a friendly debate with someone who is into IM. This person knows a lot about the industry and is someone I consider wise in many ways. However, it struck me in the course of our discussion that he was rigidly set in his ways about a few things. When I mentioned that I had made a fair bit of money from Adsense since it came out several years ago, he scoffed and basically implied that I was not serious since that was a major portion of my online income. This honestly surprised me coming from this person, so I kind of dug deeper to see where he was coming from. It turns out he'd tried it early on, didn't have much success, and had moved on to other things - some of which he has since been very successful doing.

So I probed a bit more and found out he holds this opinion about several other income methods in IM. In each case, it was something he'd tried, basically failed at, and so adopted the opinion that anyone who didn't also fail at those things was not as serious about his business and would probably not last in the industry.

This person is not a Warrior, by the way - at least not anyone I know by screen name or actual name here.

Without making this post too long, I also wanted to mention that I've had similar friendly debates with people (some who are Warriors) along these same lines, only about specifics. I got into a really fun and enlightening discussion about 3 months ago with someone who is also into Adsense, for example, and he refused to acknowledge that there was more than one way to go about it if you wanted good results. I even showed this person my own results (although I don't recommend this because Google frowns on such things). He still contended that my results were a fluke, an aberration, the exception that proves the rule.

Sigh. The point here is that you shouldn't get tunnel vision when it comes to how to make money in IM. I think nobody wins when you do. You shut off interesting ideas that might lead to a boost in your own income, but you also start spreading false information if you talk to others who are up-and-coming. Telling someone just getting started that something absolutely will not work when it just didn't work for you is harmful to everyone involved.

It's trite, but oh so true: there's more than one way to skin the cat.

Peace.

John

I'm not particularly a big fan of Adsense, but to say it's not serious or a legitimate form of income is silly.

I guess I could be a bigger fan if I had the top 5 sites for mesothelioma, or however you spell that crazy cancer keyword that ranks at the top of the bids for $ per click.

    John,

    All good points.

I think what people miss, and maybe it has to do with age, is you are never too old to learn something new, you will never know it all and sometimes the more you think you know, the less you really do.

If people would approach business/life with the understanding that every day is a new learning experience, then they would be more open to change. One thing for sure, if you can show me a better way to do things, I am open to it.

The last point I would make is that not everything is going to work for everybody, but if it works for you, who am I to knock it, even if it doesn't work for me.

    Thanks,

    John

This is why I don't think you should ever come to this forum or any forum for that matter and ask if someone gets good results from doing "x"?

Does EzineArticles give you good results? Does GoArticles give you good results? Is Adwords a good place to advertise?

Just because someone on the forum that you don't know can't get good results doesn't mean you can't

Just because person A isn't making conversions with truthaboutabs doesn't mean person B can't.

Just like anything in life, it's like you have to fall and get up yourself. You have to test to see what really works for yourself.

The good thing is that there are products that can help shorten the learning curve, but you've gotta test them to see if they work for you or your business.

Yeah, I always worry that people will come to this forum and read things we write and forget to always include "in my opinion" at the end of every sentence. LOL One person's experience should never be extrapolated to applying everywhere for everyone.

It's easier on the ego to take the stance that something doesn't work than it is to admit that we failed when we tried to make it work. Your friend seems not to understand the difference between failure and feedback.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
