Changes all the affiliate links and adsense codes to yours and then start promoting it.

I am not trying to be harsh BUT

Why didn't you think about that prior to buying it?

Anywho, the answer to the question really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Are you looking long term? If so, go ahead and do some good keyword research and start ranking in the SERPS for low hanging fruit. You want to build up quality backlinks, add fresh content on a consistent basis, etc..

If you are looking to go short run then you should look to get some AdSense going on it for the purposes of flipping, etc.

You should've planned that before you bought the website. Oh well,
the next thing to do is to send traffic to it of course. Or you can try
to resell it for a higher price.

You will need to change all the ads to your own ads, including Adsense. If you are not a member of the ad networks that are being used, you will have to apply to them. If you are not accepted by any of them, you will have to use a different ad ... one to where you are accepted.

After you get all that straightened out, you will need to promote your site ... get backlinks, social bookmark, get traffic. If it's a blog, you will also need to continue to post to it. You might also want to write some articles for ezinearticles.com to link to your site.

Work smart and hard and don't give up on it. When I first started I would buy or build a site work on it for like a month, if not less and I would see no results so I gave up on it. I would suggest making a plan, writing it down and following it every day. I did not have success until I started focusing more. Make a goal to do so many backlinks, articles, adding content to your site every day, or whatever else you need to do, and make sure that you get it done.

Do some keyword research and select those keywords which you wish to promote to gain traffic.

Don't just pull keywords out of the air. Check whether a keyword (phrase) draws enough traffic and whether the competition (backlinks of those listed on the first page of Google) is low enough for you to be able to push your web page onto the first page of the search engine.

Look for some material on how to build backlinks to those pages which support your selected keywords. This draws free traffic.

Also get a good book on how to use PPC advertising so that you can start learning about how to use paid advertising. The Definitive Guide To Adwords by Perry Marshall is a good place to start.

Also look for some material on email marketing so you can decide how you want to structure your marketing strategy. Just having a website doesn't mean that its overall design is effective. You need to learn how you want the visitors to flow so that you not only get traffic but are able to convert them to (current and future) sales.

Getting visitors onto a mailing list builds a business.

All of the above and then find some fishing forums. Fishermen are a passionate niche, add some value to their lives on forums or ask relevant questions. Make a few posts before you even think about adding anything to your sig.

I had a fishing tackle site for a few years. One thing I learned is that Adsense doesn't pay much, unfortunately. If you know about fishing, you might try building a list of subscribers and send out good fishing tips, etc. to develop a relationship with your subscribers. Then work in some higher paying affiliate products through places like Amazon, Commission Junction, etc. I also had a bit more success when I featured reviews of certain fishing products on my site. I got a lot of good feedback from regular visitors.

Bottom line - there's potential but it will take a pretty good amount of work to really build it into a good money maker unless it already has good rankings and decent traffic.

Unless you're aiming for the complete newbie, this is a tough market to fake it in. I can scan down the fishing articles at a site like EZA and tell you which ones are written by people who know what they are writing about, which are writing from research without experience and which are the link whores using some lame PLR rewrite.

The other John makes a good point - provide value in the form of good tips and real product reviews. If you can provide up-to-date fishing reports for a popular destination, you have a traffic magnet.

If you think you can make it with some generic fishing site, you'll have a long way to go. You'll be competing with the likes of fishing.com, In-fisherman, the classic hook-and-bullet magazines, even the big retailers like Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops.

I wish you luck...you'll need it.

Well, OceanBlue7, every reply you got here are truly right and i suggest you follow them.
I just want to urge you to remain consistent in whatever you choose to do after now, don't get overwhelmed by the various traffic techniques flooding the internet and don't get distracted by other money making methods that will definitely come your way when you begin promoting your site and in your journey as an internet marketer.

Just keep it simple and steady, and above all DO NOT GIVE UP! The fishing niche is a very popular niche and you can make some nice income with it, otherwise you can just sell it for some little more profit (if you're not impressed with the revenue you make from the site).

    I wish you success.

It really amazes me that some folk jump in without having at least some plan going forward. I admire you for taking the step but seriously, do you need to ask this question?

      What should you do?

Do you like fishing? If not, then go and list the site on Ebay and Flippa. You'll soon get bored of it and there's no point in entering this space without any experience, plan or passion.

<insert pun about small fish, big ponds and being eaten by sharks>

If fishing is your thing, then make a list of all the suggestions on this page (these are all tactics that might be useful later).

      Then write a business plan.

Think about revenue streams, exits and the effort that it will require.

Then do some due diligence and decide if it's worth running with.

If it is, then plan your strategy (this is where the tactics come in).

      Then work your hole off.

Find partners, build a list, set up ad swaps and integration marketing. Outsource content creation and build backlinks like a madman.

      Good Luck.

PS. Don't forget that killing the site right now might very well be the best option. Don't just stick with it because you're committed to a bad decision you made.

Marc's point is well taken. As John mentioned this is a very competitive area so you will really have to work at it and dig deep to find your niche.
If you are not passionate about it you may want to reconsider before you spend the hours needed to make it a success.
