"Go get your freakin shine box!"

I was watching one of my favorite movies last night for the 74th time - "Good Fellas."

In the pivotal scene in the bar, made man Billy Batts' famous last words before being whacked by Tommy were "Go get your freakin shine box!"

I was just thinking of all the times I was tempted to say something similar in response to people on forums, email, in real life, etc. But, sometimes it's the things you don't say that are the most significant.

If you think about all the times where you let emotions take over and really told someone what you thought of them, was it really worth it? In some cases it's necessary, but most of the time it's a royal waste of time and mental energy.

For example, you argue with someone on this forum and then you have to keep checking the thread to see what that person said in reply. You can literally waste a whole day going back and forth doing this nonsense. If you're successful, don't let miserable people bring you down to their level.

One of the main benefits of this community are the business networking opportunities. It's really counter productive to burn bridges here because you never know who may be able to help you in the future.

So next time you're about to press that Reply button, remember this:

Sometimes it's the things you don't say that are the most significant.

Thanks Ron. That's the best advice in the world. I have learned it the hard way personally, and relearned it more than once. Great minds talk about ideas, mediocre minds talk about events, and simple minds talk about people.

If you can just avoid lashing out in life... the ride will be much smoother, and more productive. Dont swing your arms at the wind... in the end the only one really worn out is you.

"You been away a long time... maybe you don't know... I don't shine shoes no more..."

"What? I just got home and already he's gettin" f^(&ing fresh..."

"Hey ma... I'm gonna borrah 'dis kitchen knife... we hit a deer and his... paw... whattya call that? His HOOF got caught in the front grille..."

    I LOVE GOODFELLAS.

    Way too much, apparently

One of my favourite movies as well, joe pesci is awesome.

You're right, most of the time it's not worth it to argue with someone,
especially on a forum. Arguing takes lots & lots of your time.

      Excellent advice, thanks!

I don't remember where I heard it or who told me, but whenever I want to reply in anger I write it down/type it and wait at least until the next day to send it. Very rarely does it ever get sent.

I spent 2 hours here today trying to whack a guy who still needs whackin', but I missed my NASCAR race (did it run?) and part of Tiger baseball. They say to choose your battles wisely; Today I didn't.

Life's too short for me to be on a constant search and destroy mission. Next time I'll outsource the wet work. --Mike

Great post, Ron. I've been thinking of starting a thread on this very topic, but now I'll just add my 2 cents to yours since you covered it well.

A forum such as this, designed to help each other and learn from each other, is a wonderful resource for networking. For those who haven't realized it yet, networking can be the difference between earning a small living or earning a BIG living in IM.

Some people seem really good at starting little fires, but it makes me wonder...
...are you here to build bridges, or to burn them?

I have not been around as long as some of you but
I cannot Swim so I would like the bridge to stay put.
This is the only forum I have viewed where the language is not offensive
and the flaming is quickly taken care of.
    Great job!
