Want to Save Yourself a Lot of Time and Heart-ache?

Alright, anybody who's owned a website for any period of time already
knows this, and is already doing this ... and if you're not, shame on you!
And as you'll read about in a moment... shame on me

The short version:
Backup Your Website!

The long version...

You see, I normally back up all of my websites (wordpress makes this
easy), but I've been so busy lately I put it in the "will do later" bin and
guess what? I never got around to it...

So today, I was cleaning out some of my old wordpress installations that
weren't being used. Lo and behold, one of the databases were labeled
wrong so I deleted my newest wordpress blog!

Needless to say, I was pretty upset about it, especially since it was all my
fault for not backing up my website. Thankfully, I only lost a few good
articles that were posted just last week (so they are fairly fresh in my
head)... but I am going to have to backtrack some, and REDO work that
has already been done.

If this were to happen with the website already established, I don't think
I'd have the motivation to rewrite everything... and I know this happens to
others out there, who just let their website go afterwards.

So needless to say, I learned my lesson and am NOT going to ever put
backing up, or setting up a backing up mechanism off until later... I'm
going to do it right off the bat.

Thankfully again, Wordpress makes this easy. Install this free plugin:
WordPress › WP-DB-Backup WordPress Plugins

It allows you to set how often it AUTOMATICALLY backs up your database,
and even sends it to an email you specify if you want.

Note to the mods: I am in no way affiliated or associated with the plugin
above, it's just very useful and everyone should use it!

Now I'm sure a lot of you already do this, already know this info, but if
this thread saves at least ONE website out there... then I guess it makes it
worth it

Take care everyone...

Backing up your blogs is a very good idea, you'll be covered when you update the script also, as you could run into problems with data when updating.

But don't forget to backup that hard drive either, you don't want to hit the power button and get a dashing line or a message "no operating system found"

I say always run your documents and data into an external hard drive or backup internal. That way you can load you OS and then restore, always backup, is a good thing!!

Yep. It's obvious but it can't be said enough.

I lost and entire hosting account for brand new site (hacked?) and it was a nightmare.

18 hours and 20438458 support emails later, I think we're back to normal :/

I totally agree. In fact I will go a step further and say backup and save onto your hard-drive. I had my host restore a backup once and somehow they managed to delete all of the backups and completely ruin the site. Losing infomation is herat breaking
