WordPress autoinstaller - how much interest ?

Hey all,

I've been seeing a couple of posts relating to WP and getting it set up easily/autoinstalled with plugins activated and so on.

What I'd like to do is get an idea of how many people would find a use for an application that allowed you to create a cutomised version of WordPress that you can use for future installs, with certain items preconfigured. I'm thinking of making this a full-blown product that I'll launch soon, but if it's of no interest, I'll probably just use it for my own blogs. Basically, I'd like to get an idea of how commercially viable this is, so any input would be welcome.

For those who would like to see what it can do, I've got a sample that can be downloaded from here:
Code:
http://hotfile.com/dl/38650956/0e0a0d7/DemoWPInstall.zip.html
I used the software that I've developed to generate a package that does the following:
  • Customises the blog title and tagline
  • Customises the first post, first page, first comment
  • Customises the links
  • Customises the link and blog categories
  • Adds and autoactivates a custom theme
  • Autoactivates a common plugin
As I mentioned in another email, even though certain plugins can be fully autoactivated and configured, in some cases this is not possible, so even though the installer activates it, it can't be configured and this needs to be done manually.

So. If anyone would like to have a look at the output of this software, feel free to download and try a test install (and you can try it out locally if you run WAMP for testing). I'd appreciate feedback on fully developing my cobbled together solution into a commercial release.

Thanks,

Will.

    Hi Will,

Wordpress Autoinstaller is a good idea..just one thing which always make me panic
of any autoinstaller i.e. With the release of new versions of the software, many
autoinstallers get broken and it is always a big pain to upgrade to latest version of
    the software...

If you are willing to provide real time support and updates for POST AutoInstall issues
then it is great resource for many mass auto blog creators...

    Regards,
    Mohsin

Well, if it's any consolation, I've checked with the 3.0 beta and none of the techniques I use are broken by the update. I've just used documented WP features to do this.

And honestly, it's a search & replace for 90% of the changes that are made, so the software works on all versions from 2.7 onwards.

The only addition I've made is the auto_activate_plugin method.

As far as support is concerned, I've always worked on the premise that a happy customer is a return customer. Support is normal for this class of application - 24 hours on normal business days. You have to concede that this sort of application's not exactly an enterprise app with fixed SLA's. Although I'd be willing to negotiate a fair rate for 24/7 support.

    Hi Will,

There are some products that do this already such as

    Mass Automation Tools

But if you check them out, and try to differentiate yourself either on feature, price or whatever else I'd agree with Big Mike and say you've definitely got something there's a market for.

    Gee

The main pain of Wordpress install is the initial install which most hosting providers automate via Fantastico. So I wouldn't buy one, but I am sure others might.

I'd be into it. Would save me a ton of time. Also if the settings could somehow be saved that would be cool. Only thing for me is that I build all my WP sites on the "Thesis" theme - so has to work with that.

Well I will tell you one thing, it would definately save a lot of time to use it...that's for sure. I use an autoblogging search and replace database to create my WP's and it saves me lots of time so yah your idea is pretty slick
