Best Option for New Domain Name

Hi Warriors, Happy Monday!!

I need some advice as I'm looking for a new domain name and I'm going by the advise from Guru Bob in the 30 Day Challenge on this matter. He says go for .com, .net, .org in that order and if these are taken you should the go for hyphenated versions of the domain name and if they are gone use a suffix or prefix in the domain name with the preference being for the suffix.

I've missed out on the .com, .net and .org for my domain name, but I can have .org.uk. So, would this be as good as a straight .org domain?

I can also have, using the example mydomainname, my-domainname or mydomain-name, but which is best - an hyphen between first and second words or second and last words?

Also I have an option of using a suffix - mydomainname1.com so here the domain contains my themed keyword (albeit with a suffix) without any hyphens and it's a top level domain as well and the most desirable of the three TLDs (i.e. a .com). Would this be the best option to go for? Would this be as good as mydomainname.com i.e the best option for a TLD?

Many thanks for helping me to arrive at the right decision.

Regards, Kevin.

I would keep looking and not settle for a .uk domain.

Also when it comes to hyphens buy both. Domains are cheap and it will help protect your brand.

Once you do anything outside of an exact match you lose any exact match boost you might have gained, so then you just have to go with the best available option. I do not recommend a .uk extension unless you are specifically targeting the UK.

Since your exact match choices are gone in .com/.net/.org then find the best .com you can. I have used mydomainname1.com and THEmydomainname.com and they are about the same. There are many differing opinions on using hyphenated names, but I do my best to stay away from them whenever possible.

I'd guess that you're asking these questions for SEO purposes. If so, I'll let the SEO experts answer them. (And you'll get a better answer in the SEO forum, btw.)

However, let me approach this question aside from the SEO stuff. Namely, you need to also consider how memorable a name is and how easy it is to say out loud.

For example, maybe you'll do a teleseminar or get on a talk radio program where you have to say your domain name out loud. If you have hyphens and numbers, that's going to get really tricky, really fast. And folks will have a hard time remembering it.

For example, let's say you choose my-domainname1.com. You have to say something like this:

"my HYPHEN domain name... the number 1... dot com"

It's confusing. And hard to remember for folks who hear the name.

Anyway, sounds like you might be more concerned about SEO, but just keep in mind that there are a whole lot of other ways to promote a site aside from SEO, and the domain name you choose can impact those promotions.

    Cheers,
    Becky
