Differences marketing to Americans over Aussies - Looking for Advice in Promoting our new Website

Hi guys, we recently launched our live version of our website http://www.seewhosells.com/, which is a price comparison shopping site. Management decided on the slogan "Shopping Smarter, Not Harder" even though I was pushing for "As Easy as 1, 2, See!"

Basically this is a site targeted towards the American market and I have to work with our associates based in the U.S, which is highly interesting HOWEVER I am not as knowledgeable on the tendencies of the American buyer compared to the Aussie market... I've done research and looked at statistics etc., but you can't sum up the INTANGIBLES that way

Any ideas for promoting our site to the US market? Any core differences between the average American and Aussie I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance

One of the things, that I would do if I was you, would be to write a press release and introduce your site/product the the masses. Doing this, can bring you some good exposure right away.

Another possibility, could be using adwords and their content networks, you can get great exposure there as well.

    Cheers,

    • Have you tried using web 2.0 like Twitter & Youtube to market yourself? There's many advantages including it being free and you can reach hundreds of thousands of people for free if done right.

Another positive about Youtube is that you can get paid for the amount of views that you get. So you are essentially killing two birds with one stone, you're marketing your business and you're getting paid to do it. I wish you the best of luck and hope that my post helps you.

We have a Facebook page for our parent company, but to be honest despite my best efforts it hasn't returned many results in terms of business; rather it's just been a forum for current clients to discuss their concerns etc.

Regarding Youtube, we will probably be getting a proper commercial made up, we are still going over the creative but are fairly sure it will be successful on TV and look good on Youtube, but the hardest time i've had in the past with Youtube is GETTING PEOPLE TO VIEW IT in the first place

I mean a quality video doesn't do much if it doesn't get viewed by the appropriate demographics... any advice?

        Cheers

Yeah a Press Release is going to definitely be coming in the near future, however again i'm finding when writing these things I have to be careful with using the "US" versions of spellings (color instead of colour, favorite instead of favourite, realize instead of realise etc. )

We've started looking at Adwords but I feel like they are targeting the wrong ones and not getting the best results per click.

      Cheers

i really don't think you would have to market differently to Americans as you would to Aussies. I mean, the basic ideas would be the same and there might be minor differences but I don't think there will be a major difference in how to market to both of them.

I can be wrong but I would strongly doubt that I am

Differences between americans and aussies. Hmmmmm which stereotype to throw out first .

Very similar cultures but IMO Americans are more aggressive in thier lifestyles. What I mean is they want big savings, benefits clearly defined, are subject to far more direct and aggressive marketing so it can be harder to get any attention. Exagerattion and hyperbole (within ethical standards) are a must for the american market. Its a must for the Aussie market but IMO needs to be taken an extra ste for the Yanks

Haha yeah, I figured the attitude difference was something like that... I can't help but feel cheesy basing marketing campaigns around "SAVE SAVE SAVE!!" "THE BEST SITE ON THE PLANET" etc. though :\ Walking the fine line between hyperbole and cheesiness, now THAT is a marketing challenge I think Aussies are generally a bit more laid back in regards to their reception of media as we aren't as bombarded with it as people in the USA thus it's easier to achieve penetration as there isn't such an advertising glut.

I have marketed to Britain and America and noticed a distinct difference. Americans expect to be sold. They expect the full on sales pitch and bells and whistles. British people need it toned down a bit, as they don't like the full on assault. I have worked with a few American sales people in the UK and they found it hard to adjust at first as they were breaking rapport by coming on too strong. I think the same does apply to sales copy.

I got no idea if Yanks and Ozzies are different though as I have never marketed to australia.

GEE, a lot of the people that got into "infomercials" for single products and really tried to ******SELL******* in the US had BRITISH or AUSTRALIAN accents!

And I WISH I could say that dumbing down was a BAD idea for all americans. IBut it IS dumb to figure that australians or Europeans are that different. Heck, I have seen some stuff you guys buy and/or sell!

Australians DO have some slang they use a LOT that Americans may not understand. And some Brits may refer to some things Americans don't know about. Luckily, I think most Americans realize about some references(since the states are ALMOST like other countries in some respects there), and I THINK most slang that is used in ads is more widely known. Then again, being American, I AM more observant of FOREIGN differences. Then again, even some BASIC English is different, like GASoline, or aluminum.

Dumbing down works full stop. I can't remember who it was early in my career who told me I would reach the largest audience if I played to the lowest common denominator, but it was true.
