Whats your opinion on E-Checks...

I've noticed over the passed month that I have received a large amount of e-checks.

Each time an e-check comes through from paypal a few days later it bounces. My question is can a person who uses an e-check to make payment get access to the product immediately? This is an info product. Does paypal allow them to return to merchant for the download page?

Today is actually the first day in the last 2 months that an e-check has processed through and actually cleared. I was going to cancel this method of payment completely but the fact that this payment has come through shows me that people may prefer to use them. I don't want to cancel it unless they people are receiving the product for free by using an e-check. Is the whole point of using an e-check becuase you have no funds in your paypal account at that time?

MY opinion on Echecks? Until the banks realize that we are not in the 19th century any more, FORGET THEM! I have had at least TWO accounts where the bank, ON PURPOSE, tried to frustrate the use of the routing and account numbers! Banks are being bought, and the purchasers DON'T care about account numbers, etc... HECK, CHASE lied to me a LOT about their takeover of wamu. I am just waiting for the NEXT lie to be exposed!

And THAT assumes the site and customer are PERFECT! They AREN'T! And there is NO verification! NONE!

And WHO has money in their paypal account when they buy? I usually don't. PAYPAL deals with that. You can BET they will NOT use echecks for THEIR funds! To be subjected to 21st century requirements, but still use only 19th century abilities? FORGET IT! That is like an amish person(avoiding trains, cars, planes, etc...) trying to go from PA to CA in 1 DAY. FORGET IT! It will NEVER happen!

Is there a way to turn the ability to pay with e-checks off in PayPal?

We have the same problem with them bouncing... it's a headache.

Yeah, you CAN disable various features, like that. You may be able to disable it by a default.

Log into PayPal, go to your Profile and click Payment Receiving Preferences. About halfway down the page look for the checkbox with the header, "Block the following payments".

Got the above from another thread I found

In the past I have paid someone using e-check. Not because I wanted to but because of a quirk in the Paypal system that would not let me use one of the other methods.

In that instance I was NOT allowed access to the product until the funds were "cleared" according to Paypal, which took a couple of days.

But I am not saying that all e-checks withhold access to the product until after the funds are good. I think it might be a matter of the product delivery script/method used. I am not sure, though.

And in my case, it was some time ago . . . possibly a couple of years ago. And as you know, things on the net change continuously, so your mileage may vary!

I've gotten paid a few times with these, however none of them have bounced so far. What's the point of an e-check though? I thought Paypal instantly transferred money from your bank account.

I don't think I've ever seen the option to use one even if I wanted to. But if they keep bouncing like that, I would definitely look into ways of fixing it.

I dunno, Steve...I get 3-4 a week. They mostly all clear after a few days without any problem at all.

In fact, I'm *so* un-bummed by the whole e-cheque thing, I make a point of sending my stuff to my *pending* customers before their cheque hits my bank a/c.

E checks are bad news! We refuse to accept them anymore. Mainly because they take much too long to clear and then you don't know if they will or not. The only checks we will accept are is someone pays for a year's service and then they have to send us a check from their personal account. We don't like it and it doesn't happen often but every once in a while we will make an exception.

It is not a good idea to take checks at all!

Yeah I would cancel them as a payment mechanism only I received an e-check that actually came through today. The main question I have is in relation to whether a person would receive their download once they send in an e-check?

    Yes!

    You can use DLGuard:

DLGuard - Download page protector, create expiring download links

DLGuard will hold the download until the echeck clears. When it clears, DLGuard will send out a download link to your customer.

    All automatic!

      Sam,

I've loved DLGuard since I first bought it...3 years ago.

As a programmer myself, I can understand the effort you've poured (and continue to pour) into DLGuard. It's one of my favourite and most valuable investments.

      Mucho respect, mate

My opinion - they're not worth the hassle. I'm sure that there are plenty of legit users, but the majority of the ones that seem to come my way aren't. If people are really interested, they'll use another method of payment.

Thanks Steve, I really appreciate it!

I think programmers get a different view on scripts - a bit more of a behind the scenes look. So from a programmers point of view, thanks

Ive heard of DLguard alright, however, the way I see it is I do not want to have a customer not in a position to pay immediately not be able to buy my product at all. Like ahlexis there are many legit payers so this would gear me towards keeping this as a service.

Yes, e-checks are a pain (10 day clearance etc). However, in the last couple of years, they haven't been used much in my businesses. Customers don't use them so much.

I don't take them any longer. Just a pain and most of them bounce. I've disabled echecks in Paypal.
