Facebook: Half-A-Billion Uniques Per Month!?!?!

Hey guys,

I just found out that Facebook just released its most recent numbers: 500 MILLION Unique visitors per month! Unreal.

I was drawn in by the impressive stats and so I searched for the history of Facebook.

Mark, the founder, started it in his dorm room at Harvard (I have pics on my blog!) and intended it to be a hot-or-not style rating site just for Harvard students. He originally hacked into the dorm database and posted all of the pictures of all of the site up to be rated.

Its unreal how quickly ideas can blow up and get huge so quickly! If you have an idea or see a need that needs to be filled just take action. You never know what could happen!!!

All the business acts like that, at first they are seemingly useless and for small purpose usage but then all of a sudden its a hit to the market. Big G created the search engine, but do you think the search engine made them millions? Its the things they done after search engine that made them the money.

Apparently, last month Facebook got more traffic than Google..

Google also started as Univesity project before it became 'Google'.

Amazing how the smallest of ideas can become global powerhouses.

Yah that's crazy, I've also heard that the average Facebook user spends like 45 minutes or something ridiculous on that site per day. I think Google's average user spends like 3-4 minutes per day.

So not only are there a ton of visitors going to Facebook but they are staying on there for a very long time.

I know this is something I should do, but I haven't really focused on it yet. Maybe next month...

Facebook has actually been 'struggling' with monetizing the site, considering what you just wrote about a user spending 45+ minutes, on average, interacting with the site. It seems as if they've changed their layout like 5 times, in the last year (maybe a little exaggerated) in an attempt to maximize profits, understandably....

And, each time, you see the emergence of protests groups demanding the "old" facebook layout back....lol

Last I heard, they were bringing in some $30,000,000+/month in revenue, but I guess they can do even better if they keep testing and changing and tweaking things...lol

Social Networking is where it is at online today... look at the top 20 sites in the Alexa Ranking... they are all social networking sites... Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo, MSN, MySpace, Twitter, Blogger, Wordpress.

If you're doing anything online today... I'm guessing you better be doing some social networking : )

It has taken me some time to get in there. It seems to require a lot more "special" attention in the way it is set up.

I guess the lesson here is to go to an Ivy League School then come up with a really good idea and launch it in said school.

When I was taking my degrees I actually 'studied.' I wonder where these guys found the time to do this stuff.

I like Facebook but I do not spend much time on it. As for marketing on Facebook I can see that is a huge potential.

The ads on the right allow you to approve or disapprove them so it seems facebook is trying to gather data for which should be apparent.

As for the marketers I just had to delete an internet marketer from my friends list because every time I logged in all I see on my wall is his stupid twitter updates on what ever CRAP he's trying to promote. He's obviously not that smart seeing he's also banned from the WF, but he is going about using FB the wrong way in my opinion.

Meh... Google is still better in my eyes, Google in my eyes will always be better traffic and requires a lot less effort to do it. Granted, facebook can be instant traffic and google can take some time.

The idea is the most important part of a business. Unfortunately, most do not take off. Not that they would not work- they would, but we don't allow them to surface.

Everything out here on the internet that works is an idea. While some are counterfeits, most are actually an existing idea done differently. Facebook is one of these. Now look!

We do not really need to reinvent the wheel; we can simply refine what we have and package it differently to succeed.

But I believe that the biggest problem is implementation. If all of us had the guts to try our ideas out, we would have more successes than failures. Just pushing one step further can make the greatest difference to a business.

That statistics just proves the fact that the human's greatest interest
is and allways will be - other human. Not products, not services, but
    other humans.

The Funny thing is... you don't even need to turn a computer on to use Facebook. My kids are on Facebook all day long via cell phone, sending pics, videos, text messages, and making new friends while breaking up with their old boy friends at the same time. LOL I can't keep up with them!
