How Many Sites Should You Host On One Hosting Account?

I use Host Gators unlimited plan as well. I have about 20 sites up on there right now. They say unlimited so there should never be a problem. I would just make sure you have your websites backed up just in case they get hacked or some bug happens.

Its always best to be prepared.

But if you did have two hosting plans I would have your one with Host Gator and have one on another Hosting someone else in the world.

Sheryl, I never thought of this being a problem. I have one account with hostgator as well. What could the potential problems be, besides the obvious one of, hostgator going down then they all do?

I used to host many domains on one host, but for SEO purposes, I changed to several different hosts and one host which alows me to host domains with multiple class-c IPs. Some people say it doesn't matter, but for me it is working well.

The only reason I ask this is because I remember reading something about it the other day but I'm not sure what thread it was in. I think it was one of those xfactor/clickbump type threads where someone had all their sites de-indexed (if that's the word) by Google.

From memory I thought someone had mentioned that it is a good idea to have your sites spread over a couple of different hosting companies and also purchase the domains from different companies. I'm guessing so that there is less of a fingerprint connecting all your sites so if some get de-indexed for whatever reason, they won't all go.

I'm not intending on building these one page minisites, my sites are sites with lots of content so hopefully it wont be an issue, but I was just wondering if it was something that should be considered anyway.

The only thing I would say about it is that it may weaken linking structure somewhat if all your sites are hosted under the same account on the same server and they all link to themselves. In other words, Google will know all these sites are yours, so they are not going to count links from one site to the next as votes from external sites.

Those links are not worthless, however. They can bring your visitors from one of your properties to another. They almost act the same as the internal links within any one of your websites do.

It is better to link various social properties (Squidoo, EzineArticles, etc.) that you create to one another in a circular manner (not back and forth) and link each of those within the circle to one of your websites. Build a circle of social properties around each website. This is where external links are viewed as votes from other sources.

Unfortunately, when hosting companies say or claim, "Unlimited" they are not being truthful. Their are numerous limitations and stop gaps that all hosting companies have. The reason the average IMer never hears or knows about these limitations is because they are not bringing in the type of traffic that would cause the hosting companies to say, "Houston we have a problem!

If you look in your Hostgator account on the left side panel under the Statistics Tab, you will see...

(a). Processes Running
(b). Inodes
(c). CPU Usage
(d). Memory Usage, etc.

Hostgator allows you 25 "Processes Running" However, you start redlining at about 17. If you continue redlining, you may get a polite, fix the problem or take your business elsewhere email.

That can and will happen by having a number of high traffic sites on the same account with a mixture of sites and scripts that are resource hogs.

I shared that to say this; don't be lulled into thinking that you have unlimited resources with any hosting company. All of them use the bait buzzword phrase "Unlimited" to grab new customers who don't know any better. Don't find this truth out the hard way.

To answer you question, the answer is, "Yes!" NEVER have that many sites on one host.
