Opportunity to purchase a domain name - require advice/thoughts

Hey guys,
I have the opportunity to purchase an exact match domain that relates perfectly with my marketplace/niche, however Id like some thoughts or feedback as to whether or not I should proceed with the transaction.

According to a whois and wayback machine lookup the domain was first registered in Dec 2001. Wayback machine shows site activity between 2002 and 2005, then from there - nothing.

The domain itself doesnt appear to be ranked at all - however it IS an exact match for a keyphrase that according to the GKT attracts 3,600 spm.

I have the opportunity to pick this up for $1K USD, however Im not sure if there are any REAL benefits to this domain, given its current state.

Lastly they have requested a cheque to be sent via regular post, Im not sure Im comfortable with this.....

Thoughts?

    Hello,
I have passed on many domain names and I have regretted it,
if the money is not an issue and the domain name will work for you to get your money back buy it.
I would use a domain company as a broker middle man instead of dealing directly with the owner.

    Something new soon.

ALWAYS use an escrow service unless you just aren't worried at all about throwing the money away. Way too easy to get scammed.

Without knowing more, the domain in question is "probably" worth the asking price, but the question is really if it will pay for itself over time. Has the name been continuously registered since 2001 or has it been dropped and re-bought? If it has continuously been registered then that is a small advantage.

If you want, PM me the domain and I can give you a better opinion.
