The most effective tool is leveraging other peoples lists.

There are many ways to do this (solo-mailings, ad-swaps, thank you page ads). The aim is to give your target market a "Reason Why" they should give you their name and email and make them feel they are getting a lot of value for that information and that they can trust you.

    All the best

Just create something for free and give away after the opt in.

    or

What I found to be effective is depending on your niche, find some promo codes and these promo codes in exchange for the email.

i.e. Want promo codes and get discounts on your favorite products? Enter your email

See, but the free-after-opt-in approach assumes you have enough traffic. I'm working on the traffic problem now, though I do already have the free-giveaway implemented for when it finally arrives.

This is not true. The truth is that you have to drive traffic to your site. You can use PPC along with article writing etc. There is no magical "instant" way to do this. It takes work. PPC is about the closest to "instant" traffic but you still pay for it.

On a related theme, if I am wanting to build an opt-in list for Wordpress blogs without the expense and hassle of Aweber, is there a plugin that someone could recommend.

    Hi there,

The best tool to use for building a list is to offer one great product for free, and then an "even better product" if that subscriber can refer 2-3 people to your site.

I think you can maximize your opt-in list very quickly this way and double your subscribers daily.

How can you tell if someone was refered from someone else?

As people above mentioned you just can't beat a FREE GIFT as an enticement to op-in.

When we offered 3 free albums and advertised this one our site our opt-ins more than tripled. Give people a sample / free related product to your niche and you optins will grow massively, and probably your conversion rate too with people coming back to you from your list.

There are other "rules too" such as using buzz words to describe your offer: "Secret" "Limited copies" "Bonus" "What they don't want you to know" "The truth about.." and they say that saying something like "free course / mini course, free guide" is better than saying "Newsletter" - people want a free guide, they don't want another newsletter
