Dumb Twitter Question...Do you see your follower's tweets?

I don't use Twitter that much, but recently started paying attention to my account and the feeds etc.

I noticed that I was seeing tweets in the timeline from people I don't know and don't follow. I think, perhaps, they are following me.

The question is, can your follower's tweets be seen by you, if you're not following them back?

Surely that can't be right can it?

Maybe I'm missing something here...

No. You only see the people that you are following. That is why so many people are begging for more followers...

As far as I know you have to follow them in order to see their tweets. Have an other look, as it does not sound right,

Then something is wrong here. Because when I visit the person who's tweet it is, it gives me the option to follow them, instead of unfollow.

That's not right is it? If they showed up in my time line, I must be following them...but when I check their Twitter profile out, it gives me the option to follow them instead of unfollow? Weird...and not cool!

Actually just figured out what's happening...

    RETWEETS!

Wow...what a cool viral way to reach a new audience. If your followers retweet tweets, it appears like a tweet in YOUR time line...from the original poster.

Gonna come up with some cool ways to get retweets now :-)

PS. - I know this is noob stuff for Twitter pros, but still, gotta learn and start somewhere with Twitter!

Bingo. Unless you select the "don't show retweets by this person" you will see anything they retweet from any other person on Twitter, whether you are following the original tweeter or not.

You only see people you are following you. You could have your twitter account setup to automatically follow people that follow you.

  • Another point I'd like to make here is its not necessary to follow someone to get their tweets. You may follow a "Twitter list" (relatively new feature of Twitter) and get tweets from that list as part of your tweet stream without following anyone individually from that list. Following a list could be useful if you don't want to follow a lot of people for a particular topic but interested in their tweets as a group.
