Hi
I am busy doing some keyword research using some advice from an Ewan Chia course. He suggests using the google keyword tool to find keywords in your niche that fit this criteria: More than 1000 google searches per month and less than 10,000 search results. I have gone through pages of keywords and have only found 2 which meet this criteria and they are only 2 words long each.
Is there a better way of doing long tail keyword research?
Is this something you can do yourself for free?
And if paying is the only option, which is the best way to go?
As I was looking at a couple of options, one was wordtracker and the other was keyword ninja software that I saw on this forum.
I'm a bit confused, any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

It depends on if you want to invest in a good software, but doing keyword research with Google Keyword Tool is a great, free method.

If you want to get a software, then go for Market Samurai. A little expensive, but worth every penny.

Agreed, the only real competition is the Top 10 listings.

If you are following someones course who mentions the amount of search results as a factor when it comes to ranking... Demand your money back, I don't know why newbies think this but it is a real shame and you are passing up on LOTS of opportunities because of this BS fact. Lets make this clear, search result play no role if you can rank for a word or not. The only thing it does is tell you how many pages there are for that keyword, that is all, those 1000000000 pages could be random and not on topic, it is just a number (which is normally wrong anyway).

There are free tools you can use to do your Market Research, google keyword tool being one. You need to focus on the top 10 listings and their onsite SEO factors and the quality of their off-site SEO. If the top 10 have awesome on-site SEO and awesome off-site SEO, forget the keyword. If they have mediocre on-site SEO and horrible off-site SEO (and the traffic is there for the keyword) you got a winner.

Yep I always look at the top 10 domains and see if I can beat them. Look for non top level domains in the SERPS, i.e. pages on peoples sites. then if I can get a domain with the keyword in it I'll go for it.

Alexa mentioned KateD who does keyword research, another great service is a Dan Jensen

I think if you sign up for the 30 challenge with Ed Dale etc and then get sign up for the free trial with Market Samurai you get 40 day trail instead of 10.

    Hope that helps.
