TIP: Check your WordPress Privacy Setting

I don't really know how it got set, perhaps I did it while clicking around, but I don't recall doing it. One of my sites had the privacy setting set to block search engines. Big oops. I was wondering why updates didn't seem to get indexed anymore.

It's worth a moment to check yours.

() I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors

There was a phase when Fantastico installs set it to block visitors by default, but they updated it back the other way.

Maybe that site you had was setup during that period.

      Great observation!

Scott I'm glad you figured this out and great "heads-up" on posting that here at the WF. I ran into that fun little situation a little while back...I was about ready to slap Google

I also wanted to add that if anyone uses Jeff Johnson's "Traffic-Getting" plug-in, after you run the optimizations using that plugin it will have automatically changed that privacy setting that Scott mentioned. (By the way, if you want to check out that plug-in, its free here: Jeff Johnson Underground Training Lab and just opt-in on the footer form that pops up).

      Thanks again Scott!

I did that once a long time ago, then sat back and wondered why the hell I couldn't rank for anything. :/ Epic fail!

It's kinda funny. I was scratching my head for a while because I always could get stuff indexed quickly. It was starting to feel like I was a guy standing on the street screaming and yelling, but no one was paying attention at all.

Thanks. Now I have all my sites to check. This is a great thing to check that I looked at a while back as well. I wonder if there was some kind of plugin that flipped the switch
