how to accept credit card payments without a merchant account?

Hi fellow warrior members. I live outside the US and I've been marketing info products for three years now and haven't accepted any kind of payment except Paypal. Although it's a great way to accept payments, I want to increase my customer base by directly accepting credit cards on my order pages.

I'm looking at many options..but I would like to know if there are any ways to accept credit cards without having to set-up a merchant account. (Clickbank is not an option for me because they pay via internationally mailed check..something that takes too long to clear/withdraw in my country).

Any recommendations? I'd truly appreciate being enlightened on this subject. Thanks!

Paypal takes credit cards and to the best of my knowledge, you don't have to be a paypal member to buy something using paypal... Am I wrong on this?

paypal is the easiest option. The person who pays you does not have to be a member or pay any extra fees. However, you will have to pay about 4% to paypal when you withdraw the money you received.

I'm afraid you can't accept credit cards without a merchant account - which means you need to use PP, CB or one of the other payment processors.

There are services called PAYMENT GATEWAYS that process payments for you PAYPAL is one. THEre is a new one thats trying to rival paypal called PROPAY. Also there is one thats been around for a while called CCBILL. The urls for both are just the plain names. BE aware however, that there are higher fees with a payment gateway than with your own account.
      \
Oh, by the way I think that CCBILL is good for many international transactions. I have been the payor through them on numerous occasions.

        Thanks for your answers guys.

Hi Jeff Mitchell, you're right..Paypal allows buyers to pay using their credit card (even without a Paypal account)..only if the seller is using website payments pro. That feature is not available in my country. What's available here is Paypal Website Payments Standard, which prompts buyers to open their own Paypal account first, before they are able to pay and get access to my product.

That extra step of signing up to Paypal is slightly hurting my conversions, because lots of customers in non-internet marketing niches don't have Paypal accounts! That may sound funny, but it's true! Precisely the reason why I'm looking for additional payment options where all they need to do is enter their personal info, credit card details, proceed to checkout, then gain instant access to my product (still planning to use Paypal as an additional payment method).

        Any other options?

Hi Dependable Trader, I've heard about CCbill but I've also read some negative reviews about it (I forgot where I read them). Can you attest to its quality service? I'd be happy to hear about your experience!!

          Incorrect.

PayPal Website Payments Standard allows customers to pay with a credit card.

      Incorrect.

There's a large number of payment processors who will allow you to take credit card payments. FastSpring would be my recommendation.

Hmm, in your case (Paypal not an option) I'd suggest 2CO [2Checkout] if they are available in your country. The customers can pay via their credit card or paypal and the money goes into your bank account.

    Hi,

Take a look at Plimus.com. They are a great online payment services company and pretty simple to set up so that your cart page (that is hosted on their site) looks exactly like your own site. They take paypal and lots of other methods of payment. I switched from a pure paypal wordpress cart widget to Plimus and my sales increased. It all seems way more professional in my opinion.

Take a look at my site. This is the home page - www.senderbot.com and then click through as if you were going to make a purchase - or click here. You can see that you end up on a Plimus page but its a seamless transition. I like it.

    Cheers

Bellthorpe..just to clarify: yes Website Payments Standard accepts credit cards from buyers, but they need to create a Paypal account first. Website Payments Pro directly accepts credit card payments from buyers, without them having to create a Paypal account. I would have wanted the Pro service since it's faster and easier, but it's not available here in the Philippines. Bummer. :-)

Someone made mention of Fastspring, I'll look into it. THanks

Anyway, is it true that Paypal freezes accounts for no apparent reason? Hasn't happened to me before but I'm starting to have apprehensions. Let me know about your experiences!

No, they don't need to create a PayPal account first. They can use credit cards such as Visa and charge cards such as American Express (although the cards accepted depends on the country of residence).

To demonstrate, I've set up a page with a PayPal button, and a walk-through of the process. Anyone who wants to see how PayPal Website Payments Standard works, please visit that page.

I'll take the page down a month from now, on 29th May.

A payment gateway is actually a service that sends the transaction information from your web site to your merchant account. A merchant account is the service that process the transactions and then sends the money to your bank account.

Services like Propay and Paypal Pro bundle the gateway and merchant account services in one package.

Bellthorpe..just to clarify: yes Website Payments Standard accepts credit cards from buyers, but they need to create a Paypal account first. Website Payments Pro directly accepts credit card payments from buyers, without them having to create a Paypal account
No, Website Payment Pro bundles the gateway and merchant account services and acts as your regular merchant account would. The entire payment process is on your site. It is like any other gateway/merchant account processor combination.

With the standard Paypal service, a buyer can still pay with a credit card without signing up for a Paypal account, they will just be sent to the Paypal site to complete the payment.

That's not quite correct. PayPal don't care about your citizenship. They do care about your residence though.

      Thanks Bellthorpe.

I use Website Payments standard, and the only Paypal message that greets my customers is this:

"Create A Paypal Account Or Login".

Means, they can't pay without a Paypal account.

Right now, that's the only option available for customers buying from my site. Maybe it has something to do with my location/country.

      Thanks anyway.

I'm pretty sure Paypal takes credit cards as well and If you can get Paypal to work you may want to check out www.ejunkie.com. I know it's a bit off topic but they offer some pretty cool services like thank you pages, autoresponder and one of the best features is that they will capture the customers email addy for you...and to top it all off....its FREE as long as the product is smaller than 500 megabytes (most EBooks fall in this range). It really does have some pretty cool features that might help you....just my 2 cents
