About the Low Double Opt-in Rate

I have a website in a health related niche that I have a squeeze page to invite visitors to double opt-in my newsletter in order to get a free ebook. I used Google AdWords and Facebook to promote my page and the response is good. Out of every 10 targeted visitors, about 1 to 2 will opt-in my newsletter. I use a self-hosted mailing script on my shard hosting server to handle this.

However, problem comes as I use a double opt-in system. For every visitor who have put down his/her email address, my email server will send out a confirmation email. My statistics show that for every 3 visitors who supplied their contacts, only two of them finally confirmed by the link in my confirmation email.

That means, I lost 1/3 of the visitors because they never clicked the confirmation link.

I think there are possible reasons for that:

1) They never received my confirmation email due to delivery problems of email.

2) They did receive but somehow they never click the link (due to ignorance or some other reasons). I have already put down instructions in my webpage to advise people to carefully check this email and somehow if they did not receive the confirmation email, they have to email me.

I am now thinking if most of the loss are because of reason 1. If this is the case, then I might need to find out the cause and hence the solution

I have the following questions in mind now:

1) Is it because my confirmation email has been filtered by the spam system of the visitors?

2) Is it because of some other reasons I have not though of?

3) If I use email newsletter service like Awber.com, would it help to solve the problem(s)?

4) Any people have similar problems? Or if 1/3 is a normal loss-rate for a double opt-in system?

Any experienced people can throw me some light on this?

Thanks

Damen

Damen - what system are you using now? If you're not on Aweber I'd be tempted to switch. Their delivery rates are high and they also have some great tools to help encourage the confirmation, including a video that you can display on your success page.

I am just using an email script on my server. I have been using it for years.... So you think using Aweber will solve my problem?

Yes, I agree about Aweber. It really is an amazing service.

Most of my lists in Aweber are double opt-in. I do notice that a good share of my visitors do not confirm. Probably about 1 in 4 or so, but you do have the option with Aweber to turn off the double opt-in so they don't have to confirm but there is a lot of controversy about that.

I'm just testing it out with one list to see how it goes. The good news is that you can always turn it back on if you see that you are getting any spam complaints. There will be a very small percentage of spam complaints even if they do confirm just because people don't remember all the things they have signed up for.

It seems that I'm on everyone's list as now when I sign up I get that message about already having been subscribed. LOL

Mrs. S. Great tip about the video on the success page. Something I hadn't put into use but will now.

Also will take you up on your free gifts offered hear and read your stuff.

      Thanks,
      Sally

    (Disclosure: I work at AWeber.)

    Damen,

There are a number of areas you can adjust to optimize your
    confirmation rate:

    * Signup form copy (are people apt to fill it out just to get
something, like an ebook, that they think is on the thank you
page? If so, your form doesn't set expectations properly.)

    * Thank you page copy and format (some use audio or video)

    * Confirm message copy (subject and body)

    * Extra incentive for confirming RIGHT NOW (unannounced
    bonus/es)

Assuming you've thoroughly tested all of those areas, the issue
could indeed be deliverability of the confirm email, in which case
moving to an ESP such as AWeber may help to resolve that.
There's a lot that goes into establishing and maintaining high
deliverability. Going the DIY route instead of via an ESP, while it
may appear to save you money, can be quite costly as
troubleshooting delivery issues can eat up a lot of your valuable
    time.

    Hope this helps!

A free ebook or report ...

This works real well providing you have checked everything else.

You can not beat Awebers deliverability!
